Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread 2
It should be co-ROY between Barnes and Mobley.
Cade is looking nice but his efficiency leaves much to be desired and he is leading a team that is looking at another lottery pick.
If you have to choose between 3 guys and they are putting up similar numbers...contribution to winning and the team's record should really be the deciding factor...and in that case...Cade shouldn't be considered top 2.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread 2
now that Mobley is injured and his team isn't a high seed anymore they're going to start pushing for Cade to win ROY....can't have Barnes winning it

1. Scottie Barnes, W, Raptors
Before the draft, David Thorpe and I both LOVED Barnes, and yet I think it’s safe to say that neither of us saw Barnes as a serious candidate for Rookie of the Year. Barnes was supposed to be a couple of years away from showing us what his ceiling would be in the NBA. However, not only has his strong play already demonstrated that he could become a top-10 player in the league, but he’s played a huge role in the Raptors’ jump from lottery team to playoff contender in his first season in the league.
According to a pair of advanced metrics systems, FiveThirtyEight’s RAPTOR and Kostya Medvedovsky’s DARKO, Barnes is having the best season of the top three ROY contenders. BBall Index’s LEBRON has Barnes second behind Mobley.
Barnes’ numbers since the All-Star break are very strong: 18.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game with 53.9% shooting.
My reason for choosing Barnes is simple: He’s been the most complete rookie this season. Cunningham has been a better scorer, and Mobley already looks like an All-NBA defender, but it’s Barnes who has shown the ability to be elite on both ends of the floor. In my conversations, NBA scouts project outcomes that include such superstars as Kawhi Leonard and Giannis Antetokounmpo. In short, scouts think he could win an MVP award someday.
The biggest question about Barnes coming into the draft was his jump shot, and he still needs improvement — he’s shooting a shade under 30% from 3.

This.
Impressive for nba scouts to say this about him. What a pick. We are lucky.

I love Scottie but its been tough watching his jumper regress this season. I guess NBA scouts would know better, maybe the flashes were enough for them, but I can't project him at MVP level knowing he'll probably need at least a league-average 3pt shot to be a high-level scorer.

I know Barnes and Mobley contribute to winning and they are playing like NBA vets at times, but from an aesthetic POV, Cade is just on a different level than both those guys. Barnes cannot pull-off the attack angles and dribble hesitations or step-backs. Cade also is an excellent passer and it is showing more now. Mobley and Barnes for sure can defend, but I don't think Cade is far behind given his size and strength.
You watch the performance against Brooklyn and Cade and it just highlights what is obvious - he is still the best player in the draft - without question. What he did against Brooklyn was superstar stuff:

Not that I disagree with you, but Barnes has had way better games than that. He'll his game against BK earlier on in the year might be better...
Not to mention his Boston game or Laker game

In Raptor Ball I Trust

On the season, he's been very inefficient.

Cade is more polished offensively than Barns or Mobley however his ceiling is much lower. In terms of the ROY race ... Cades simply getting higher usage on a bad team and has been really inefficient. That's before bringing up defense. If Cade wins over Barnes or Mobley the award is a joke.

I doesn't happen all the time, but maybe Cade can score in Kyrie's efficiency in the future, who knows.
A player's ceiling is absolutely subjective because tbh if Mobley or Cade was on our team instead of Barnes we'd be arguing what the opposing fanbase is arguing.
It's only been a year, let's see what the rooks have in year 2 and who makes a leap etc.

You forget just how bad Siakam was as a 3 point shooter in his first 2 seasons....

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread 2
Does anyone know what happened with Barnes last game, and why he was benched to start the second half? He looked totally disinterested in the 2nd Q, and was disengaged when he was benched.

just didn't come out with the energy we needed in order to match the wolves and made some mistakes on both ends. It happens.
It's not an issue and the good thing is he rebounded from it in 2nd half. Kid is still 20. Nurse said post game he wanted Precious to start on Kat because that was the matchup so might as well start with it

Yah His body language was not good last night. It's only the first time i noticed that though. Possible there was some drama behind closed doors. Maybe he got singled out at halftime. Not too worried about. Rookie seasons always have ups and downs. I rememeber bosh looked like he was gonna punch vince carter during a timeout in his rookie year.
All in all....there are no signs of a bigger problem. He just looked different last night. No big deal unless it becomes a pattern.
As far as the benching...barnes missed a whole bunch of assignments and switches in the first half. It didnt look like laziness to me. Just wrong decisions. He might be frusterated with our schemes.
At 6:55 left in 1st quarter we got caught with all 5 guys standing in a hotizontal line. Barnes was on the weak side and didnt fall back. A timberwolf just strolled past our line for an open layup. Nurse called timeout and started yelling. Pretty sure he was yelling at barnes.

He was really hurting the team offensively because he wasn't being guarded and didn't attack mismatches. Defensively he let Towns get to his right hand and had a really tough time. It's also been several games where his effort level can be questioned and you can't play that soft at this time of the year.
He's a rookie and will bounce back, but I worry that teams will hunt him in the playoffs if his defense does not improve. The bigger worry also being that he will not get guarded since his jumpshot is non-existent and he has made a 3 in 5 games now and is shooting 24% from 3 in March.
We might see some Ben Simmons situation in this playoffs which could mess with the spacing and Nurse might opt for Precious since he's better defensively and a better shooter right now.
