I would like to think the Sixers expected this would happen and did everything by the books to cover their asses. If so, it's going to be very difficult for Simmons to get the full amount back.If they did and he still gets the money back, the next lockout is going to very interesting. I'm sure the owners are getting sick of bending over for the players association at this point.

it will be easy for ben simmons and the union to demonstrate that he would have played for the sixers if not for the team (specifically, doc rivers) creating an untenable work environment for him, especiallly considering ongoing mental health issues that have been documented. daryl morey has done yeoman's work navigating through this mine field but i suspect the sixers always knew that they would have to pay simmons eventually.

There's still a handful of people on realgm who are like this, they pop up in every thread about Ben Simmons to say the same thing. Best not to pay attention to it, there's nothing there.

The argument is usually 'his teammates disrespected him and treated him like a dog!' when in this situation one teammates and a coach each made one small criticism in passing after a series of poor performances, during speeches in which they made dozens of criticisms of everyone else (including themselves, repeatedly). That's 100% normal NBA stuff, and it would be condescending, walking on eggshells BS for no one on the team to have acknowledged 'obviously Ben wasn't great there' at all after the Hawks series. Given how minimal the criticism was (literally no more than 15 seconds total in the course of about 4 hours of post-game remarks) it's not a reasonable position to say his teammates did something so awful that he needed to stop his life to cope with it. And his subsequent actions--like refusing to even meet with his teammates even after 6 months, showing up to practice only to stand still at midcourt, etc--don't suggest someone who was trying in good faith in having his respect restored.

That said, I guess this take does sound viable to me: the media and social media backlash to Simmons became so intense in the months after the ATL series that he felt the Philly environment had become hostile to him. I don't respect that stance but I think it's his best leg to stand on. If he veers into 'my coach stopped kissing my a for 10 seconds after I played historically bad in a horrible loss!!!' he's gonna be toast, but if he can blame it more on the fans and media that might get him somehwere.

The next lockout can't come quick enough, this is ridiculous. How are the NBPA supporting him is completely beyond me... Try to pull this crap in any other country/league in the world and you won't see a penny.
