MVP Candidates against top 10 defenses this season

Post#1 » by eathb_au » Sun Apr 3, 2022 4:12 am

Stole this content but I think it makes good discussion.

Team defenses are ranked by DRtg/A (basically points allowed per 100 possessions).

Look I know there's already a lot of support for Jokic btb MVP but his numbers going up against better defenses, especially his TS% is absolutely insane.

Luka is nice too.

It would have been nice to include win/loss records.

Also, is it top 10 defenses at the time that they played them, or top 10 defenses now?

Were any key guys missing from those defenses when some guys played them compared to others? All in all, who cares really. I think that it's pretty clear that the real mvp debate will be decided when these guys have to match up in the postseason

..and were those defenses healthy at the time they played them?

The Cavs and the Warriors have a top 10 defense, but Jarret Allen and Draymond Green missed half the season alsmost.
Bam Adebayo also missed games with the Heat.
The Celtics are now different without their rim protector.

Tatum isn't MVP candidate.

Embiid looks great against top defenses as well.

Celtics were total disaster earlier in the season when brown missed some games. Sorry but just because recent surge I can't ignore poor first half they had. Tatum is outside of top 5. Only players which matter in MVP discussion, the end.

He currently has a better record than Jokic and Embiid, is tied with Luka and only half a game behind Giannis. It seems like your just arbitrarily putting more weight on the start of the season

By this logic Curry is MVP candidate as well.

Seems about right with Jokic. Outside of that disaster against Boston, where he missed 25 shots, he's performed well against all the currently ranked top 10 defenses.

But it can also be a little deceiving, because against the Warriors this season, Draymond didn't play in any of those games and Jokic tore them apart. Would Draymond have made a difference? Probably, he's a good defensive player.

CP3 >> Booker

"MVP candidate" LOL
Also, something that might surprise people. I think when it comes to athleticism, agility, physical attributes and skill I rate LeBron only in the top 50.

All of those guys are having clearly superior individual seasons than Tatum. And if you want to pick a guy who isn’t having as good a season as the top guys, but simply reward the team success… then Booker is a more logical selection than Tatum and it would be a travesty if Booker won also

Tatum is excellent but he’s not the MVP, not even on the short list

I think Jokic needs to see success in the playoffs. That is what keeps him from being at the same tier as Gianis and Curry for me. I realize that isnt fully under his control, but he just hasnt scared me in the playoffs.

Have you watched Denver in the playoffs?

I mean, he was, before he got injured.
