Pistons add Carsen Edwards

Shams Charania
@ShamsCharania
The Detroit Pistons are planning to sign NBA G League guard Carsen Edwards to a two-year contract, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Edwards averaged nearly 27 points per game for G League’s Salt Lake City this season.

Not big news, but my only question is how do we have a roster spot for him?

Pretty sure we've had an open roster spot since the Bagley trade. I'm assuming that's the spot Key was in on his 10 days.

He can't be any worse than Saben Lee right?

Let's hope.

I've been happy with Key so far. Clearly he's still an end of the bench/gleague guy, but he showed enough that's worth hanging onto for a while to see if he can further develop. I don't know anything about this Carsten dude, but I trust we had a good reason for the signing. If we can find the occasional diamond in the rough this way it's money well spent, even if the majority of them are busts.

Shorter, perhaps slightly more athletic Frank Jackson.

Not really sure what the point of this is.

I think this means unless Sabian Lee blows everyone away the next 4 games, I think we move him this summer for something.

We could just waive Lee and his $1.7 mil contract. Not the end of the world. We could also decline Frank Jacksons option. I assume CoJo takes the player option and we pick up Diallo. They must have seen something they liked to give the contract, so I'm just going to view it like a 2nd round pick come early. For all those people upset we traded 4 of them away... here ya go lol

Still remember when Saben was dubbed part of our "core four" alongside Bey, Hayes, and Stewart.

Things sure change- not that I ever thought Saben warranted being part of such a label.

I appreciate that Weaver is active in looking for a gem in the rough. I think this move is about as likely as Saben Lee turning out, but it's not going to hurt. Now and then you get a Covington to emerge.

It certainly seems that Lee' has officially entered his last days as a Piston though. Can't see having both of them next season.

Yep, almost guaranteed that Edwards takes Lee’s spot as PG3 (or PG4 if Cade goes to PG).

I imagine next year is unguaranteed, I think he will get a chance to earn his next year salary in our last 4 games.

could also be a camp body for the off season (with a chance to earn a roster spot next season). chris smith will be out the entire off season but taking up a roster spot if we didn't cut him.

Saben Lee may not be here next season, but it won't be because we signed Carsen Edwards. Edwards is not a point guard. He's a shooter in a point guard's body without point guard abilities. Not everyone under 6'0" is a point guard. There's a reason why he's been in the G-league his whole career, and it's not because he doesn't have range.

Edwards looked like he had a quick release and a decent stroke tonight, but he got his shot blocked 3 or 4 times. At 5'11" he's gonna have to figure that part out. But he reminded me a bit of Dana Barros. He's probably not really an NBA player, but he looked better than Lee.

I don't think Edwards showed anything along the lines of plugging him in next to Cade obviously, but as a bench backcourt guy next to Hayes I already like him better than Lee. He showed a helluva lot more pure PG ability than Lee ever showed.

And yes, I know--go ahead and throw Lee's per stats out there and make an argument if you'd like that he's a better PG than Edwards or even Hayes. But the eye test of watching games and watching Lee's inability to facilitate an effective offense tells a different story.

9:1 assist to turnover ratio in 31 minutes is pretty good for a guy who just joined the team. And he came from Salt Lake City so there isn't even any continuity there with our own affiliate.

For sure that's an impressive mark for someone coming out of no where playing with all new players.

I tend to agree he is more of a small scoring guard that could fit good next to Hayes off the bench most likely since Hayes can guard the bigger guards. That said, he also might just be someone that ends up being our 15th man and spends a bunch of time down in the G League.

It will certainly be interesting to see who ends up being back out of Frank Jackson, Saben Lee, and CoJo.
