Re: Any Recent Players Sign a "Scottie Pippen" Contract?
Many of us know that in 1991 Pippen signed one of the worst contracts in the NBA. A five-year 18 million dollar deal that he played under much of his prime years.
I beg to differ.
That's $3.6 million/year. At the time of that signing Magic Johnson was making $2.5 million/year, so was Karl Malone, David Robinson, and a few others. Not many were making more than $3.5 million (maybe two?) and the highest salary was $4.2 million (Ewing).
Heck in 1991-92 Michael Jordan's salary was only $3.3 million. He did not get what we might consider a huge salary increase until 5 years later.
Plus in today's dollars Pippen's deal is some $32,000,000 over 5 years. Even if half was taken up by taxes, that's still some $16,000,000, or over $3,000,000/year.
That's far more than enough to live comfortably even today (let alone 30 years ago) over the rest of your entire life. He chose the path of long term security over short term risk, actually a wise move (think Nerlens Noel, or Dennis Schroder).
He may have foolishly wasted some of that, but nonetheless a far better position to be in than some 99.99% of us.

Tim Duncan routinely took cheap deals in the latter half of his career for the team. He was 1st team All NBA in 2013 as a 36 year old making 9.5M that season

Would say that pretty ok. But his current contract of 4m/year is very small for his play. But when he signed that it was probably pretty ok.
And feels like he doesnt really care that much about the money, DFS is maybe the realest player in the NBA and gives a lot of what he makes back to the community where he grew up.
Feels like most of the NBA players never can get that reality. They are hyped guys in highschool, hyped in colege and then get drafted high and instantly are millionaires. With his background, with seeing his brother getting shot as a kid and becoming a dad at 15, he was on just a different level of maturity before he ever thought about becoming a millionaire. So he kinda sees everything as a bonus, put in the work for mavs that grabbed him when he went undrafted and stood by his side and let him evolve into what he is today. Pretty sure he would have taken even less then the contract he was given now, but im glad cuban takes care of the players that shows loyalty and doesnt try to **** them over.
DFS is probably the player in the NBA I respect the most.

Robert Williams of Celtics signed extension this year that averages 12 million over the next 4 years. He probably would have got a free agent offer 2x that this off season.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

DFS with his actual contract of 3/12m. Outplayed it from the beginning.
Same goes for Brunson with his four year minimum deal

He actually did. You should watch The Last Dance.

Sabonis at 4/75 seems like a deal considering he had made two all star teams.

If you are a below average NBA rookie or better you are on a Scottie Pippen contract.

The telling thing about Silver's analysis, however, is that even though he finds the financial surplus associated with obtaining the first pick to be larger than the surplus associated with obtaining a later pick, there is substantial surplus all throughout the draft. In other words, even the last player picked in the first round is expected to generate more wins for his team than the team could afford to purchase with the same money on the open market.

He's 23, barely 6 feet, only shoots 30% from three, went undrafted and didn't have an outstanding college career... The minimum seems about right.
The Pels are hoping to get a Dinwiddie but more often than not that doesn't happen.

Rookies are underpaid because the CBA isn't negotiated by future rookies, it's set up to benefit veterans.

Mikal Bridges could have easily gotten the Max this summer, but instead he signed for 4 years at $90 million I believe. He lost out on about $40 million total, or about $10 million per year by signing early.

The CBA negotiations of 2012 and 1999 were both won by the owners. Their objective was to take as much as possible from the players. To get the vets to sign off they put in place rookie scale contracts to allow the vets to get 30 cents back for the dollars they lost to the owners.
Anyway this is immaterial, people asked who are the Scottie Pippens. It is all the rookies.

A lot of people thought he was overpaid based on his per game averages IIRC.

Gotta be Lu Dort. He still has another year on his 4 year, 5 million dollar contract. He could get 15m a year this offseason if he was a free agent. Hope he leaves OKC when hes a UFA in 2023.
