When we talk top 10 defenders, I think we should assess them based on their offensive skillset as well then.

You're being facetious, but this is absolutely true to a degree, especially in terms of actually building a team. It has never been harder to hide guys on offense or defense, and players are asked to do more on both ends than any other time in NBA history. A guy like Tony Allen would not get playing time any more, the "3" in 3&D isn't optional. Teams need at least 4 shooters on the floor, and every guy needs to be able to switch and guard the perimeter, to a certain degree.

So it's quite possible there are Top 10 defenders we just don't know about, because they're not good enough on offense to get playing time.

I hear what you're saying here. The funny thing though is that all I'm hearing from all these other posters is that Trae is not good enough on defense to get playing time.

You're right that I'm being mostly facetious. However I do find it strange that, in a conversation specifically about offense, the same folks go out of their way to inject 'defense' into the discussion. But only when talking about one player and literally no one else. I find it weird.

Because ultimately the point is made that Trae should be 1st team all NBA or an MVP candidate. It never remains 'how good is he on offense'.

Atlanta fans can't make outrageous claims and ignore his defense (consistently) and then get outraged when it's brought up.

I’d say so for sure. Could argue top 2 this year.

The thread title is "Is Trae a top 5 player on offense".

Where does all-NBA or MVP come into the discussion? Sounds like you're trying to drag other thread fights into this one.

When we list our top 5 offensive players, I think everyone should add a blurb about their defense as well. Or does that just apply to one guy?

Sorry, you're excusing me of dragging other thread fights into this one?

Nah, don't be that guy. My post was in response to others doing the same thing you're doing. But I'm thinking you know that already.

I think he is. Obviously a good shooter and scorer in the floater range but he's maybe the best passer in the league. Fantastic control over the game, he can make a top 10 offense on his own.

I would gladly take any of the following guys as my primary scoring option in a playoff series over Trae:

Jokic
Giannis
Embiid
Luka
Lebron
Curry
Durant

I would put Trae in the 8 - 10 category

Don't see why anyone would think Trae Young should be anywhere near the top.
Just look at his averages for the last 20 games:

30.2 points per game
10.8 assists per game
47.9 field goal %
38.9 3 point %
92.2 free throw %

We all know that most any NBA player can do this, don't we !!

Trae Young this season:

28.3 ppg/9.7 apg
60% TS%/34% USG
38% 3P%/90% FT%
6th in estimated wins per dunks&threes
7th in RAPTOR WAR per 538
ATL #2 in ORTG

Engineers an elite offense with career high efficiency on a team with no other All Star players. Deserves an All NBA spot.

Embiid and Giannis are iffy. Obviously phenomenal players but, offensively, it's just easier to be a guard. We saw what happened to Embiid in game 7 against the Hawks.

I mean yeah, but if we’re being honest it losses some of its luster when you dont expend as much on the defensive end and are a top usg guy. Thats what makes guys like KD/Embiid so amazing. Its more difficult to praise players who dont give the same effort on both sides of the ball.

Trae is to NYC to what Godzilla is to Tokyo-

I've been very impressed by that side of the ball from him the more I watch this season (although arguably the worst defensive star in the NBA still, and I don't see that changing). Trae moved up to All NBA 2nd team with Booker (over Ja) for me.

OK. But what about considering passing and playmaking in the offense, aside from scoring??
Because being 8th without that, and given the advantage he has over MOST of the list in those other departments, could very well raise him a good amount of positions in global offense ranking, IMHO.
