I’m not sure he’d take anything beyond a max, which we’d be insane to offer. As fans, what if he takes 20m per year? 25m? Is not having that cap space worth locking up the 20th-ish best PG in the league?
I don’t think we offer any extension and play it out. He’s locked up for two more seasons. I just wonder how cut throat the FO will be. DLo may start acting out. Not playing through minor injuries (but does he now?).
To me, for this team to move up in the West, we either need a massive PF upgrade (someone that can space and play elite D) or get an elite PG.The projected salary cap for the 2022-2023 season is $119 million, which means that the Wolves may have to offer approximately $35.7 million a year (adjusted every year for inflation) to retain him. However, DLo will only turn 26 this year, so the extension would encompass some of the prime years of his career.

Yeah, pass on that.
I don’t think Russell has the leverage to demand a max deal, by threatening that other teams will offer him the max if we don’t. He’s been better than expected, but it’s hard to determine how much of his success is from himself, and how much is from being on a team that has improved with a better KAT, Ant, Finch, etc. DLo’s individual stats are not great - his FG 41% and 3P 34% are the second worst of his career.
