The point is that it encourages treadmill teams to stay on the treadmill. As long as they stay in the play in mix, they will not blow up the roster

Oh noes! The league won't have 10 teams all trying to lose games!

Yeah playin is great and it’s not going anywhere. NBA needs more meaningful games and less regular season games.

Exactly.

Play in games are far more entertaining than watching OKC(and other loser tanker’s) put a bunch of 10 day contract guys out there for 40 minutes.

Disagree with respect to the Kings. Have been out of the playoffs for so long (10 years? 15 years?). There must come a time when you need to start aiming for a playoff instead having a high lottery pick mentality year after year after year. (We are 2 years away from being two years away)

To watch them- hell yes.

Is it “fair”, especially if you are a team that finished 7 or 8 and didn’t make it? Maybe. Every year and each conference will be different in regards to fairness. Sometimes it will suck, sometimes a head to head will be the best way to decide two very close teams in the standings.

It really shows how great the product is. There are just too many low stakes games, including in the playoffs. It's super fun watching be forced to make adjustments over the course of a game, rather than over a series.

I love the game but I’m sick for Cavs fans - because all your life being 7th or 8th meant you made it to the playoffs...so if the wiz get 7th and Trae rips out our hearts and eats it raw at center court all while smiling and waving good bye...I might throw a chair on the court....

But as a fan of basketball- tell me when was the last nba game that was as good as the Duke UNC tournament game...before wolves clippers or Hawks Cleveland or the GSW griz play In games...that wasn’t a finals game 7...of course

I like them. I don't mind terribly that my team was eliminated. Allen's not healthy. He was trying to play with one hand. I feel like if you're not good enough to finish top-6, maybe you're better off with the pick.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

If only the NBA introduced final four tournaments like the Euroleague

Nah. It really isn't fair.

I think the playin works for the situation that we had in the East, where 7-10 were all separated by only 1 game.

But it shouldn't have applied to the Clippers and the TWolves who were 6 and 10 games respectively ahead of the 9 and 10 seed. The 9 and 10 seeds did not deserve to play for a playoff spot. Now, the Clippers are out because they couldn't have PG play due to COVID for one game. So their season was completely wasted.

Also, I'm not sure it's going to have the intended competitive effect that the NBA thinks it will. If teams 7-8 know that they can't get that 6th seed, they'll just start resting players to prepare for the playin.

The nba needs to give more teams reasons to celebrate so I guess it’s a good thing. It’s a shame that we can’t reduce the number of regular season games. If the season was 41 games every game would be so much higher quality. In lieu of that, I guess I will take mid season tournaments, so long as the number of games don’t increase.

If I were Silver, I’d cut 20 games from each season and replace that with a mid season tournament.

I heard that the NBA is going to add a post-season tournament comprised of the 5 teams in each conference that don't make the playoffs or the play in tournament. This will be a double elimination tournament, tentatively called the "State Farm Insurance Against Failure Tournament", that will replace the draft lottery. Each team will be eliminated and awarded a trophy upon winning 2 games. Losers will continue to play each other until there is only one team remaining without two victories. That team will not get a trophy but will receive the number one pick in the draft. The nine other draft picks will be awarded to teams as they win games and are eliminated form the tourney. The league has not yet announced how ties will be decided, noting that all of the tie-breakers currently under consideration don't make much sense.

I'm enjoying it, for sure. Makes the bottom seeds a little more interesting. Crappy for some teams that might have squeaked in before, but the tension is good. Adds a little more value to your record and matchups over the regular season, too, which is nice.
