Hawks defense is currently ranked 26th.
However, thought I'd take a look at our 2nd half of the season defensive metrics. We started slowly and was really bad including the COVID game.
As of January 17th (40 games):
DefRTG of 113.7 is 16th in the NBA
NetRTG is +4.7 which is 4th in NBA (Heat are 5th at +4.6)
Record is 26-14 (Heat are 26-13)
.....and this is with John Collins missing 26 of those 40 games.

Hawks had a 103.6 DefRTG in the 2 playin games.
Playoff D is starting to take shape and we got better as the season progressed. No Capela will certainly have an impact though, bummer.

This outcome seemed inevitable. Let's make the adjustments and compete in Game 2.

Team mailed it in. Its one thing take 3s even crazy long 3s but if you shoot them with no Hawks past half court you are not playing smart. Emotionally, mentally and physically this team just couldn't compete today. Way too much 1 on 1. If we dont make real passes not bailouts then we don't deserve to win.
Okay its 1 game. Lets move on.

After what happened in CLE, I was still hoping at the haf, but nothing really changed. Just noticed that they played a bit better with John than without him, which is a ood thing even if he will still be limited on the next games.
Not having Clint is really hurting

15 AST for ATL - 35 AST for MIA, yes 35!

And I still can't watch one good game live. Only watched CHA and CLE in replay, but decided to watch this one live as it was only the 1st game of the series, won't do it again :(

Miami passed to get each other open. We often only passed after one on one dribble did not work.

Miami Heat staying wary of Trae Young despite stifling Atlanta Hawks in Game 1

The Heat's defense might have suffocated Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young all game in Sunday's 115-91 Game 1 win of their first-round series, but the East's No. 1 seed knows it can't expect Young and the eighth-seeded Hawks to go quietly.

Young acknowledged the fatigue that that schedule caused, but admitted that Miami's defense played a factor in tying his own low-water mark for the second-most 3-pointers he has attempted in a game without a make.

"You definitely feel the heavy legs, but you have to give them credit," Young said. "They came out aggressive, they came out with a lot of energy."

Which is precisely the approach the Heat are expecting from Young in a bounce-back effort.

"You better be on edge," said Spoelstra. "You have to be on edge. That team can really score in bunches. Obviously Trae Young can just ignite at any point. So if you relax at any point, all of the sudden he hits a couple, that can turn into a lot more. You have to respect that."

"Listen, he's going to make more than one shot," said Kyle Lowry who had 10 points and nine assists. "He's going to have more than four assists. He's going to explode. But we just got to stay patient and stick with what we do."

Disappointing game but it happens. We need to focus on game two and get the win. Go Hawks

There was a total of nine fast break points in the game. Miami had 5, Hawks 4.

Points in the paint Miami 38, Hawks 26

I think the Heat can be taken in the paint as well as with quick pick and pops. The pick and then drible drible drible at the top of the key just gives them time to reset so I would go away from that. Charles Barkley also had a point. If a big switches on on Trae then our big should get the ball to punish their small inside.

I'm actually ok with the game 1 loss, and I'm okay with Trae's bad game and Butler.

Trae had a bad game in Miami, and the Hawks lost. What would really get me worried is if Trae had a good game and the Hawks still loss.

If Trae is the player we think he is and Coach Nate is the kind of coach we think he is, then adjustments will be made.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
