Why shouldn’t it matter? Marcus Smart is the best defender for Celtics whether they are playing Bucks, GSW, 76ers and doesn’t get exposed when switched on Giannis, Embiid, Durant and certainly doesn’t wilt against the best littlest guards in NBA either. Is there a defender with a better track record against Steph Curry?

You can game plan against the Celtics defense but under no circumstance is Marcus Smart the guy who is exposed the way Rudy Gobert was last night.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Because (1) it's a regular season award, and (2) it's Defensive Player of the year, not of the last two playoffs or what have you. All that should matter is how each player performed this past regular season.

I'm glad a non center won it. It was getting sad to see Gobert just get handed the award year after year.

It's strange how little we discuss data when talking about these awards.

I would think a forum devoted to basketball would have more statheads.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

It's okay. The title is all we care about. This will only motivate Mikal and the Suns to lock it down even more this postseason.

Enough votes have been leaked that all the major awards are known except ROY (Mobley narrow lead over Barnes, can go either way), and Monty ran away with the award.

Not mad at it. Glad he won but I think Draymond was more deserving..or did he miss too many games? Either way congrats to Smart who is a tough defender and one of the best in the league

The statheads mostly stay on the Player Comparison board and understandably so, arguing on the General Board using actual statistical arguments is a complete waste of time.

Completely undeserved selection. Marcus Smart was nowhere in the DPOY conversation until Williams got hurt and there’s no backing for Smart winning this other than narrative and the typical Boston media bias.

DPOY is probably the most inconsistent award with the most wishy washy choices, but Marcus is amazing, and every team would improve immensely with him in the starting lineup. People don't need to take it so serious, but they get so caught up in using trophies in their player comparisons that it makes them mad when one goes the other way.

Either way, I’m freaking pumped for him, dude has put in a TON of work on his game.

Draymond only played like half the season, so he wasn't going to win.

I'm very happy for Smart. He's been working hard his whole career to get to this level and the recognition means a lot to him.

There were a lot of great candidates this year so it's no surprise that many people would have voted for someone else. But I mean, all the top candidates received votes so it's not like your preferred player got overlooked. Smart got more votes. That's how voting works. The winner takes all and everyone else is annoyed.

Smart a terrific defender, and also does the other things like tips; loose balls and hustle plays.

He has a knack of getting the ball back, kind of like draymond.

The inconsistency of DPOY makes it hard to take seriously. Why Smart this year and not Simmons last year when the latter is clearly better on D? Why is Bam not playing enough games to even be considered for DPOY when Gobert won DPOY with the same amount of games?

Spare me with this but Marcus Smart is amazing nonsense, everyone was trashing him at the start of the year when the Celtics were underperforming lmao.

I don’t mind Smart winning it if he’s getting it over Gobert.

I mean, that’s precisely why he won it. Draymond would have been near unanimous if he didn’t miss so much time. Giannis is getting compared to Giannis. Robert Williams would have had it if not for the injuries. JJJ and Bridges are not a name for the casual voter. And Bam for some reason doesn’t get the love. Smart was the next man up in the “Anyone but Gobert Player of the Year” award.

To be fair I would have given it to Bam or JJJ. I also suffer from Gobert fatigue.

the worst thing is to give it to non qualified player which is a guard. if anyone thinks smart is as good as payton, i dont know what to say. theres a reason guards havent won for decades. as much as i hate gobert, i would rather have him as last choice.
smart is all defensive 1st-2nd caliber nothing special he is vastly inferior to tony allen or thybulle.

smart and dpoy just doesnt fit together i dont think any non celtics fan would ever put him in serious conversation for his entire career.
Doncic will be goat. Lauri will be his sidekick.

I never said he was as good as Allen or Payton or Mookie the actual best defensive PG of the 90's. I don't think Smart deserves the award but Robert Williams was my vote and he missed a lot of tmie. We all suffer from Gobert fatigue with this award and just for that fact alone I'm ok with Smart getting it.
