Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread 3
Scottie is so much more engaged on both ends of the court when he’s the 2nd ball handler for this team.
I hope FVV is humble enough to know the team’s ceiling is higher if he’s the 3rd ball handler behind Siakam and Barnes next year.

Fred's 3pt rate keeps going up, which is good, but it's at 58% this year and guys like Devonte Graham and Patty Mills, who is are terrible inside the arc and very good outside it are at 71% and 70% and 70% and 69% the last 2 years, and I think that should be the goal next year for Nurse and Fred. Less 2s, more 3s, because Scottie has the ball more and Fred is running off ball and hunting 3s more rather than looking to get the ball and create or run pick and rolls.
Where's the D?

The problem with that line of thinking is that FVV actually is good in the PnR as the ball handler (73rd percentile) whereas Graham (34th percentile) and Mills (16th percentile) are terrible. FVV is at his best when he is shooting C&S threes, but he has been improving in the PnR every year and those actions shouldn't be completely snuffed out. That being said, we've already seen a pretty drastic shift during this season. FVV's 3PAr was 52% in 2021 then it jumped up to 63% in 2022. Because the ball was in FVV's hands less as the season went along, his AST/TO ratio also climbed from 2.3 in 2021 to 2.8 in 2022. His overall efficiency plummeted because of the late-season injury though.
With the ball in FVV's hands less, Scottie had a bit more of an opportunity to make plays (64.8 touches in 36 MPG in 2021 and 67.8 touches in 35 MPG in 2022) and his efficiency stayed almost exactly the same with more usage (marginally better AST/TO ratio and marginally worse TS%). It's always a good sign when you can slowly increase a young player's usage without experiencing a drop in his efficiency. He was even better down the stretch too (+0.2 AST/TO ratio and +3 TS%) and he has carried that over into the playoffs so far with a nearly 5:1 AST/TO ratio and 57 TS%. Pretty wild stuff, especially considering his struggles against the Sixers during the season and the fact that he has played 2 of his 3 games with an injury holding him back a bit.

Well.. we're winning road elimination playoff games with him at PG as a rookie... soo it's probably safe to say long-term he's a PG.
Which is an enormous size advantage for us every single game.

Really fun watching Pascal and Scottie run PG for us and manage the game like they've been doing it for a decade. Thought they were both outstanding. Also had zero turnovers between them both in 2nd half. Great stuff.
Barnes still not 100% but he's inching closer and these 2 days will help him. When he's aggressive scoring, we just look way more dangerous.

Been saying all year, Scottie is best utilised with the ball in his hands making things happen. Spotting him in the corner is a complete waste of what he brings. And I'm glad he's showcasing that ability now.

Barnes is still hurt. When he had a one on one against embiid, he opted not to drive, which make sense

Well, yeah, he was splitting duties with Pascal and others. But he was given more responsibility and made generally made good things happen. I wouldn't expect him to be Luka out there in terms of USG.

Wow, I was so bummed out by the game 1 loss and Scottie's injury that I didn't even realize that he had almost effortlessly got a triple double in his playoff debut. God damn this guy is so incredibly talented and poised

Yeah, if you figure 2 on Scottie, Barnes and Siakam will on the court at all times and staggered he'll still get a fair amount of offense to run as the #2 when one of Siakam or Barnes sits. We're in a nice spot.

He's so composed it's ridiculous. Some guys become invisible when they don't have the ball, he's the exact opposite even though he doesn't run around off screens or anything. He looked like he was moving in slow motion but in a good way, doesn't get sped up.

Also, if you're going to go undersized at center, you should at least go bigger at the PG/guard positions to compensate and have overall average good length.
If you're 6'8" at center, you can't go 6'0" at a guard position. It's just too small overall. You're sacrificing size at C and in your backcourt. If you have a small center, you can't have a traditionally small backcourt.

Poise the kid has it and it's served him well. He just loves playing basketball and competing. He does the little things that win you basketball games.

We might but it all depends on his work ethic and our development system coming through. He already has the character of a star player.

I suppose that depends on your criteria for being generational. In recent times, I think of LeBron, KD, Giannis, Kawhi (for a very short time), Steph, Bird, Magic, Jordan, Olajuwon, D-Rob, Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, KG. That's a very hard list to join.
