I'll take the middle position here. Thought it was all right. Eggers is a good director, and it has some strong visuals, but I didn't find it terribly memorable and the characters, for the most part, are shells. The ending is also very cheesy. I thought was very good, though.

Caught “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” the other night.
Nic Cage is an actor ive grown more on over the years. He really is the Andy Kaufman of dramatic acting.
This one was silly and delightful, though I thought it was a bit safe. I was expecting more a crazy f’d up journey through Nicky’s mind.

Not too much talk about Severance on here. Definitely my show of the year. Such a fun balance of dystopia while being cute and whimsical at the same time - I wasn’t sure that was possible? Defiant jazz, melon parties, Burt and Irving, plus Christopher Walken reaching Jeff Goldblum levels of doing his own shtick.

They Call Me Magic is good but felt too condensed.

I hated it
Had no clue it was a horror movie
Thought I was going to see a Game of Thrones style genre film
I regret not walking out on it
It felt like a horror movie to you? It reminded me of Apocalypto which I also enjoyed. But it's understandable that those types of movies aren't for everyone.

Re: OT: TV and Movies
I’ve been rewatching “Detroiters.” With all the terrible comedies and series that fail from the start, I can’t fathom why it got cancelled after two seasons. Great concept, great chemistry, originality, fun guest stars, lots of legit laugh out loud moments. Who are the executives making these decisions? And on what criteria?
Flight of the Conchords and Detroiters are the best “two season only” sitcoms ever, and far and away better than most of the crap in syndication.

I'm not a HUGE FotC guy, but I am a Detroiters Guy, and it's been easier to sell people on it after the viral success of I Think You Should Leave. Mort Crim.

It's a bummer what happened to Comedy Central. Not everything they aired was a home run, but for a long time it was a great place to find some unique mid-budget comedies that I don't see as much anymore. When streaming exploded they were awful at making their shows easy to watch (I didn't watch Detroiters until it was on Paramount Plus), then a couple of years ago they axed all of their live action and now just make cartoons and re-run Seinfeld.

Re: OT: TV and Movies
Comedy Central has decided to go the Florida Marlins route. Why spend money on trying when merely existing is more profitable? As an aside, I'm pretty over the "let's just make our adult comedy animated" fad. Not because I'm against animation or anything like that, but it's clearly cynical. They're not trying to do something interesting, they're doing what's cheap and easy.

Comedy Central definitely led the league for a while in good comedies from unique voices that lasted 1-2 seasons. Some of their live action stuff shifted to HBO Max though (The Other Two, South Side, maybe others).
Anybody watch Review? That **** was phenomenal.

I actually had in my head that he was in Breaking Bad (been so long since I watched it) that I was actually expecting him to get away or be saved somehow. Oddly, maybe it was better to watch it that way as then I was surprised.
Resident Lillard truther since 2015.

Re: OT: TV and Movies
Giancarlo Esposito said he's open to doing a series exploring Gus Fring's backstory but I think Vince Gilligan is ready to move on. I'd be on board for a series about Leonel and Marco Salamanca. They're bad ass.

I have gotten to the point where I ask people “do awful regional commercials make you laugh?” and if they say yes, I plead the hilarity of Detroiters. And of they say no, I let it it go.
Tim Robinson is definitely not for everyone. But IMO Detroiters is the most mainstream/accessible way to package him. Its a great vehicle for his unique mix of bizarre and charm.
The Mort Crim furniture shoot episode is genius, they just write for and execute that character so perfectly. “Is there a father in the picture? Ohh, good.” Mort is the quintessential newsman - somehow “midwest genuine” but also blustery and over the top at the same time.
The episode where they get the motown singer to sing the wig jingle, as well as Sam’s Dad’s bday (Mr Bones’ fall) are also great.
