How Good was Matt Harpring?

Post#1 » by Liam_Gallagher » Wed Apr 27, 2022 5:57 pm

While looking at his BBallRef page, his scoring looked impressive. I always thought he was a bruising, bad-a** defensive wing but he averaged over 16 PPG a few times.

How good was he?
G - James | Rondo
G - Bradley | Caruso
F - Green | Caldwell-Pope
F - Davis | Kuzma | Morris
C - McGee | Howard

I think he could remind a guy like Harrison Barnes.
Actually he was a good shooter and finisher near the basket, not great handling.

He was a really good role player who could do a little bit of everything. Very good rebounder for his height too. It felt like he could be the final piece for a contender, but not necessarily a top 2 player on a team. It was a shame that injuries hit him so hard relatively early in his career, because it felt like he had more basketball to give.

Slightly above average talent that didn't make an overwhelming impact.

He was a really good role player.
He was hard nosed player, with a midrange shot automatic. As some has said, he can't put the ball in the floor, but he was a overall good player.

Harpring is from the Nawfside of Atlanta, that's how good he was. He's so good he birthed a clone coming into the draft that will carry on his legacy.

He was really tough nosed, maybe a little dirty at times, and a good shooter. Reminds me of a SF version of Grayson Allen, maybe a bit of Dillion Brooks in there. He fit his era well, I don’t think he’d have been as suited to today’s game because he was more of a bruiser at times and less finesse and would probably get cooked by quick guards on the perimeter

I never did. Harpring was clearly the superior player.

Garrity: 7.3 ppg / 2.6 reb / 0.8 apg / 41.7% fg / 39.8% 3fg / never averaged more than 11.1 ppg

vs.

Harpring:11.5 ppg / 5.1 reb / 1.4 apg / 48.1% fg / 33.1% 3fg / averaged 17.6 ppg one year for a playoff team.

First time I've see him on TV, the man got some serious biceps for a basketball player. A less athletic Desmond Bane would be my guess?

Harpring was a very decent role player in his prime. Bad defender though, aside from rebounding. He was extremely hardnosed, so it was easy to think he was a better defender than he really was.

His best year was pretty strong: https://www.82games.com/0607/0607UTA.HTM

His rebounding was his defining strength. Pretty much a beast in there, especially on offense.

I remember him being a solid role player and starter. Didn't pay too much attention to the Jazz to really have too strong of an opinion about him.
