Pistons want Bagley for 3 years.

Post#1 » by zeebneeb » Wed Apr 27, 2022 11:09 pm

"James L. Edwards III of The Athletic reported the Pistons are hoping to sign Bagley to a three-year contract after his solid play after a midseason trade to Detroit.

Bagley averaged 14.6 points and 6.8 rebounds in 18 games with the Pistons after being essentially jettisoned from the Sacramento Kings rotation. While those numbers are on par with his first three seasons in Sacramento, Bagley seemed more engaged on both ends of the floor after getting a long-desired change of scenery.

"Probably the most fun I've had playing the game," Bagley said of his time in Detroit. "That's how it's supposed to feel. I'm used to the environment that basketball is fun. I've enjoyed my time since I've gotten here."

This is fine with me, as the chemistry between Bagley and Cade happened quickly, and I believe Bagley is still growing as a player, and played very well for the Pistons.

Seems good to me as well provided the terms aren't too exorbitant; which I don't really expect them to be.

So a 3 year 30 million contract with a player option on the 3rd year?

That'll give him two years to fully rehab his value while still getting market money and an opt out if he wants to move on which gives him flexibility

That's what I'm thinking. 11/12 per wouldn't surprise me nor would 8/9.

The Athletic projects 3yrs 21-24 mil

I wouldn’t be upset with 3yr 30 mil though. That’s perfect for the first big off the bench. Would just have to move Olynyk or Grant or both.

I'd do 3 for $30 million only if its a team option.
I'd do 3 years $27 million with no options either way. Id do 3 years $24 million if he gets a player option.

I hope he wants a two year, or three with TO. We may end up with a better option through this draft, or Bagley may break out.

Of course, the three year thing might be a Weaver plan to have decisions and money available before a Cade extension kicks in. Of course, that only works if we don’t re-sign Grant (or on a two year deal, which seems unlikely). The other young guys are a year earlier, but only Bey looks like a guy that might eat a lot of cap.

3/27 seems fair, no need for Weaver to outbid himself. I view Bagley as a 6th or 7th man. Productive as a finisher and rebounder, lob threat for cade, but can't shoot, doesn't impact the game defensively, and isn't a guy you want making decisions on the court.

Three years, under $30 million with a team option on year three sounds good to me. In this environment, Bagley will almost certainly not regress and could become much more valuable by the end of year one.

I would not be shocked at $12+ per year. He can still take the QO and try to play himself into a larger contract. Bigs are always expensive and i expect the actual number to piss off most of the board. *shrug*

How much cap space we actually have is still questionable. If we make a run at Brunson that leaves nothing for Bags at all. If we manage to dump Grant and/or Olynyk then we've got a lot more playroom. Still a lot of ways this can break.

Are bigs that don't reliably stretch the floor or defend the rim always expensive? I like Bagley and want him back, but also think we should be able to get him on a fairly reasonable deal.

That would be a steal if they got him at 3yrs 21-24M. I can't see that being realistic at all.
I think 3yrs 30-36M is in the ballpark of what he'll cost and I'm ok with it. He might be flawed but he does two things really well, score around the rim and rebound, plus he's young enough to have some growth potential still so it's pretty much a no brainer to sign him if the numbers are reasonable.

That comes from James Edwards from the Athletic so there’s probably some grounds for that.

Contracts sound bigger when they first break until the details come out like Olynyk’s contract. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s 3 years 30 but only 24 mil is guaranteed.

Yep no need to over bid at all. Weaver did him a favor anyways from the basement lock up that was the Kings. We're fine with him, fine without him anyways

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

^ weird post after the talk above about possibly very reasonable contract terms.

I think everyone needs to take Cade into account here. His play with Bagley on the floor was so much better, it was insane. If there is a replacement for him, and his abilities, then fine, but there can never not be a player like him on the floor with Cade at all times, except for certain instances.(end game 3 ball scenario).

Man is it May 17th yet? Really would like to know where the Pistons are slotted already.

I'm OK with low to mid 20s for 3 years.

That contract has value. Bagley is likely to become at least slightly better in his prime, hopefully better defense and little more shooting.

Then he becomes a really solid 1st big off the bench for basically nothing.

The big thing with Bagley is, we paid two 2nd rounders to get his bird rights. We don't have to submit a big offer we hope won't get matched. We can come in with a reasonable 3 year offer that's good for the team and if Bagley doesn't like it he can play for his QO for one year.... or we can always cut him loose if we want to spend that money somewhere else.

What's the endgame with Bagley here?

The general consensus is that having him at center isn't viable. So what if we land in a draft spot where the BPA is a power forward? Do we let him walk?
