After watching this, it appears they drafted him for his return abilities one, and two, for his speed. Justin Fields has a great deep ball, so with a guy with that much speed, he'll be able to stretch the field quite a bit, which is pretty important. He also seems to be pretty strong, it looks like he breaks a fair amount of tackles and doesn't go down on first contact.

Means nothing if he can't run a route or you have to throw a perfect ball everytime that lands in his body. And it will be hard for Justin to throw a perfect ball with no protection.

I feel like Emery exposed himself pretty early on. Poles is going at a record breaking pace. He did all of his mock drafts and simulations for what exactly?

He ran enough routes in college to get open, and having burner speed helps a lot too. Route running is something you can learn, too.
And who says the ball has to be "perfect" in order for him to catch it? You can see in that film that not every ball he caught was a perfect throw. He may not be Devante Adams when it comes to catching contested throws or making difficult catches, but to say the ball has to be a perfect throw in order for him to make the catch is nonsense.

You can see the catch he made at 5:14 in the film for example- scooping a low throw off the turf and turning it into a TD.
And BTW, the player every GM is trying to find- Deebo Samuels- he lead the NFL in drops last year. So players don't have to be great at everything to be effective.

Starting at 3:10 in the film, three catches in a row he made were on balls he had to reach or extend for.

Lots of WRs still on the board.

I'd like Kyle Phillips as the slot WR.

The Bears offense for awhile now has suffered from lack of explosive players. Tarik Cohen had one year where he provided that. But if the Bears want to become a big play offense, they will need guys who can turn small plays into big ones, and I think that was likely the thinking behind picking Jones where they did. He can make big plays in the return game, as well as in the passing game. And he's sturdy enough to be used in that hybrid sort of role like Deebo. Being tough to bring down combined with blazing speed is a good combination. Of course he has weaknesses but if he didn't he would have been there in the third round.

I can think of another Bears receiver with elite speed who wasn't the greatest ball catcher either, but who still made a big impact- Willie Gault. Also from TN as a matter of fact.

Patriots took a QB- wow, you'd think they would have bigger needs than that. It's been a weird draft for them, taking that guy in the first round that was ranked 3rd round talent.

There goes Austin.

Reminds me more of Tyreek Hill than Velus, but I guess Velus has more positional versatility.

Bo Melton still available, if we double dip at WR.

Well, Poles said he wanted to get more picks this year. Went from 6 to 10 picks after trading next years 6 to two 7ths and traded back twice here.

If you could get one legit starter from all those dart throws then it's probably worth it.

There's talk that this draft is deeper than usual due to players getting a 6th year of eligibility so that backend of the draft could really bring in some decent talent.

Really would love Kyle Phillips or Bo Melton.

The last part of the draft is gunna be fun at least. They must like the rest of their draft board - and they clearly have holes. Poles said he wanted more picks, he succeeded today.
