:-? As a kid my dad was a bit of an old school fan and would kind of disapprove of behind the back dribbles because of the frequency of carrying by old school standards to complete one. He accepted that it was useful and not called, but couldn’t get past how a ball could be dribbled in front of the body then wrapped around about 75% of the body and then dribbled in front again without it being carried.

Yeah, even as jaded as I've become to carrying, that one really stood out even in real time.

I believe strict carrying rules are also a major reason why super old basketball clips looks like a bunch of uncoordinated fools. There is way less control if you truly have to keep your hands on top of the ball.

For whatever reason this is one issue that doesn't really seem to bother me. I definitely think stuff like that Twitter video that was posted earlier and stuff that is an actual travel should be called but if it's just a little carry I don't see the harm in it. They haven't called it in years so whatever. It just makes the game more entertaining. Would you really rather be seeing guys dribbling from just the top down like they used to do in the 60s?

Sure, this is so blatant it crosses the line where carries often actually do get called, so it should have been called.

But getting outraged about NBA players routinely carrying the ball is like, to paraphrase Tibor Fischer, going to the grocery store and being shocked by the vegetables.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yesterday I was lying; today I'm telling the truth.

Been happening since Magic really. But if they’re going to allow that ridiculous step back 3 gather step nonsense then I can’t be bothered to care about this. Unless it benefits my team, then by all means, call it.

Pointing it out again - its absolutely hilarious to call out a Ja Morant carry when you have a Jordan Poole PFP

Morant, Poole, Irving, and Harden carry the ball multiple times per game, and I'm sure there are plenty more who arent egregious about it

Steph got called for a travel here last series. Kinda similar to Ja, few steps before a dribble.

You can pretty much replace Ja's name with anyone in the league nowadays. With that said, Ja is up there with a few others as one of the most blatant in the game. I agree with what others have said, Jordan Poole is in that top tier group as well.

Even with me being completed jaded by the normal amount of carrying that goes on in the NBA. There is always a few times in every game with those two that I almost chuckle with how blatant they are.

Poole's crossovers are egregious carries so whatever. But calling traveling on Klay a few possession later in a 3 point game with less than a minute left seems suspect when you let this go.

I believe I've seen a highlight of Giannis getting the ball before half court, dribbling once, and dunking.

Just watched 1 highlight, stole the ball at opponents 3 point line, 1 dribble and a dunk.

It is also one of the reasons besides the 3 that perimeter players are thriving while postup play is largely dead. Kareem didn't need to cheat against the rules to score.

I actually don't care about the palming violations and etc. The lax rules on dribbling violations has allowed an explosion of offensive creativity.

I don't wanna go back to the Bob Cousy days.

The play where they admitted the non-call was gratuitous (and a travel) but otherwise... I don't want the game to go back to 70s/80s carry calls. Why?

Exactly. And do we really want that?

People keep saying "everybody does it." Not everyone does it like Morant--he's easily the most blatant.
