Re: Western Conference | Round 2 | (1) Phoenix Suns vs. (4) Dallas Mavericks (2-2)
If anyone wants to start talking about what the Mavs did to their gameplan to overcome the Suns the last 2 games (besides hitting a lot of 3's) that would be refreshing. I didn't watch the first 2 games that closely so it's tougher to asses. I've heard people talk on podcasts and such but I'm curious what some of the X's and O's experts here think is going on. This is quite a turn around! I'll be honest, I thought the Mavs had no chance whatsoever so I wasn't playing close attention to the series at first.
I'm also curious what you guys think the Suns might do to adjust. It's clear Kidd has found something that is working vs. the Suns, so it's time for Monty to make his own adjustments.

Well, for one, getting CP in foul trouble and only on the floor for 23 minutes probably helped a lot. Of course that's not something they expect to replicate so I can't call it a game plan, but it did happen and certainly helped.

Far from an expert but just watching the games...
All in on 5-out small ball.
Powell´s minutes:
Game 1 15:46
Game 2 13:18
Game 3 10:10
Game 4 9:45
Kleber´s minutes:
Game 1 24:53
Game 2 28:02
Game 3 32:54
Game 4 34:04
Even Bertans is getting some minutes at center.
Another important aspect. More ballhandling opportunities for Brunson and Dinwiddie. More post touches for Luka. Suns are trying to avoid double teams but when Luka is in the post they have no other option. They have no big wing that can stop him from playing bully ball. Not to mention that the physicality in the paint is forcing the refs to make decisions but for the most part the offensive player is getting the benefit of the whistle. For every offensive foul they call on Luka he probably draws 3-4 defensive fouls.

They mostly started playing defense and played with a ton more energy. In their first 2 games they looked like scared children who can't hit a shot. Brunson/DFS and Maxi all stepped up, so it wasn't just Luka show. It's literally what every Mavs fan was saying entire season. If role players do their thing and everyone plays hard on defensive end, they can beat anyone. I still think Suns better overall roster talent will prevail at the end but Mavs at least showed that their season wasn't a fluke.

Doing traps or the big who defends the pick and roll doing shadow press constantly making Paul and Booker force a lot of 2 on 1 situations or taking the ball out of his hands and taking both out of the midrange where they operate all doing a big hole in the center of the midcourt and they can't connect clean with Ayton letting more space to the wings but even with that they are rotating really good on defense well and Bullock doing a really good individual defense on Paul. Playing with much more intensity winning clearly the rebound battle doing a really good work as a team in this department and hurting them in transition, winning the 50/50 balls all those dirty plays ending the ball in the hands of Dallas, the role players stepping up and the bench clearly winning the battle with every game with more players more involved. And Luka dominating impacting mentally on Paul, Ayton who has him lost on defense with the 5 guys open constantly moving and Bridges who has this guy out of the series.
The zone of Phoenix slow down Dallas and Luka in the second half well and because Paul was in foul trouble probably they are going to use it again even they used it sometimes mixed it with the individual defense in the games 1 and 2 and did Luka lost the ball more than once time but I expect Phoenix at home playing much more aggressive on both ends. The home court is clearly paying dividends.

The real question in this series should be who's that kids mom? She kind of fine.

This game will obviously be very tough for the Mavs. I expect the Suns to come out on fire. If the Mavs can withstand the initial surge and get back to their defense I think the Mavs have a great shot to win game 5. The Mava are clearly not going to allow Chris Paul to be the one to beat them. The Suns are going to have to find someone else to be the playmaker/distributor.

For me, the most surprising aspect of this series is how much of a non-factor Ayton has been. I thought that this would be the series he would really dominate. He was dominant in the first round series against Pelicans, and continued that dominance into game 1. Since then, he's been just average. Not particularly terrible, but not impactful. It's a big reason why the Mavs have tied up the series and why they might pull of an upset.

After the first two games the Mavs have really been clamping down on him in the paint as soon as he gets the ball. They’re forcing him to beat them with his passing (out of the double team) and he hasn’t been able to do it. He’s not finding the open man when he passes out of the double team. Also he seems like he’s a little passive sometimes when he does have the ball. He doesn’t have a dominant go to move in the post yet.

It’s a good thing she had Chris Paul there to threaten to beat up that 14 year old.

Somehow I doubt the opposing unruly fans of another team wanted to "hug" two women suns fans. And even if they did, keep your damn hands to yourself, trying to give "unwanted hugs" is no better than a creep at a club harassing a girl and getting handsy when she's clearly uncomfortable.
That "14 year old kid" is in college by the way, his insta handle is all over twitter. CP3 handled it just fine. He's protecting his family like a man is supposed to and remained a lot calmer than he could've been. Honestly a lot of players in his shoes, if a grown ass man (not a kid, gtfo) tried to put their hands on their wife or mother there would be no i'll see you later, it would've been i'll see you right now.
So far the only people i've seen defend this are mavs fans or dedicated CP3 haters. I'm not a fan of either team or a big CP3 fan, but every one of ya'll clowns know damn well how you would react if it were your wife or mother instead.

Suns defenders were also leaving shooters wide open on the corners which was really stupid with the way they were hitting at a high rate.
I said this from the beginning that Suns need to not worry too much about Luka scoring most of the shots just make sure no one else gets off, Luka didn't shoot efficiently but he created opportunities for the shooters which should happen less in game 5 or at least do it sparingly.

Well now I’ve seen the video (the Tik Tok above)… it was clearly the younger kid who was what, 10 years old? It doesn’t justify touching someone but if that’s what you’re getting angry over, then damn, they need to get out of their bubble.
I’m a CP3 fan but he needs to get his facts straight before accusing people of doing things. No wonder the kid looked so confused in the original videos.
