NEW YORK — Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and longtime NBA Global Ambassador Bob Lanier passed away earlier today at the age of 73 following a short illness. He was surrounded by his family.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement:

“Bob Lanier was a Hall of Fame player and among the most talented centers in the history of the NBA, but his impact on the league went far beyond what he accomplished on the court. For more than 30 years, Bob served as our global ambassador and as a special assistant to David Stern and then me, traveling the world to teach the game’s values and make a positive impact on young people everywhere. It was a labor of love for Bob, who was one of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever been around. His enormous influence on the NBA was also seen during his time as President of the National Basketball Players Association, where he played a key role in the negotiation of a game-changing collective bargaining agreement.

“I learned so much from Bob by simply watching how he connected with people. He was a close friend who I will miss dearly, as will so many of his colleagues across the NBA who were inspired by his generosity. We send our deepest condolences to Bob’s family and friends.”

Another great big man and Buffalo native+Western New York legend who played at St. Bonaventure and then for the Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks is now headed to the skies. Struggled with recent health issues. RIP legend. Great player and even better person. Thank you for your contributions to the game and paving the way forward for future players+fans. Truly was a gentle giant to the core and got to meet him at the Naismith hall of fame and he's truly a gentle giant to the core.

He had some terrible knees though.

He was excellent player, very underrated by basketball fans in his own era and overlooked by fans today.

Rest in peace, Big Bob!

RIP legend.

He had such a sweet looking sky hook.

I remember him winning one of the NBA one-on-one competitions just by backing down and scoring at will.

Bob Lanier and Dave Bing were the two names you thought of on the Pistons in the 70's. I would give the edge to Bob because he played for the Pistons longer. IIRC on the back of those basketball cards they had a "Fun facts" and Bob's had written that he wore a size 26 shoe.

Oh wow Big Bob! Rest those big size 22s easy, big fella.

He had one of those frustrating careers where he didn't get to play on a good team until he was past his prime.

I believe he was one of the biggest snubs on the top 50 list and top 75 list the league put out. He was great for the Pistons in the 70s and had several years of being a top 4 MVP candidate in the league. Look at his entire career and put it next to someone like Anthony Davis and Bob Lanier 100% deserves to be there instead.

Bob Lanier was a great player and is not remembered nearly enough...this is how you know that a lot of the players playing now will be forgotten and only those who win titles will be remembered....
I'm so tired of the typical......

RIP, Mr. Lanier. I hadn’t signed on to Realgm for awhile now, but I wanted to pay respects to Big Bob, one of the best centers ever. Glad to see other expressing tribute. Fully deserved.
Though Dr. J, Darnell Hillman, and Artis Gilmore's fros got most of the attention, George C. Trapp's fro should be noted for its bouncy qualities.

I’ll always love that Kareem line from “Airplane”

“i’ve been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night! Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes”

RIP big fella.

One of the greatest centers ever. Certifiable top 100 player from my point of view.

And, by all accounts, a very good person too, and owner of, as far as I know, the biggest feet in NBA's history, size 26 ("boat feet", as we call here in Brazil).

May God welcome you with open arms. RIP.
