Magic is the recruiter. Phil is not. Magic can always talk to guys and bring dudes in. He has value.

Phil is an all-time coach but was an awful GM..
Lakers intently listening to great players and great coaches for their opinions on roster construction continues to be hilarious. Just get one GM that knows what he's doing and get out of the way of yourselves.
Yeah, that is how a smart business man would run a team, but not Jeanie. She has to have a "personal connection" with anyone she works with or else that person apparently can't do the job for some unholy reason.

Jeanie even had the gall to complain about "having the 4th highest payroll" and not getting into the playoffs. She created the mess which put together the roster and gave Klutch and LeBron the authority to lobby for making the trade for Westbrook. She does not have the financial resources to compete with Balmer-Lacob/Guber (can Jeanie put together the resources to build a Laker arena?); she does not have the smarts to hire the right front office person to put a better product on the floor; she does not have the gravitas necessary to guide the Laker franchise.
I have brought this up on other threads, and it rings loudly-and-true: It may be time for Jeanie to take a page from Mark Davis's playbook and move the Lakers to Vegas, get into a new arena on the Strip, build up the valuation of the team, and re-boot the whole organization as the Las Vegas Lakers.

There is a type West always recruits and leans on. A defender type. May not be a superstar, but can defend. Maybe a lengthy player. And those guys can be fillers and role players. The trend with brons teams are shooters. Surrounding him, but those guys can't play D. We have a team that cannot play defense. No defensive specialist types. Our team needs to be totally revamped.

Jeannie shouldn't be complaining about having the 4th highest payroll because they are top 3 in the league in revenues. BTW, per Spotract, they are actually 6th highest and not 4th.
But I just don't see the logic of moving to Vegas as the solution. You make it sound like the Raiders have won 5 rings already.
Dodgers won, Rams won...and no, it's not because they're in LA but because they have DEDICATED owners with DEEP POCKETS.

I know this is not a popular term in 2022, but I wish she'd man up, take ownership and fire or re-assign Linda, Kurt, Rob Pelinka to other areas of the team not affiliated with making basketball decisions.
Then, elevate Jesse and Joey to take care of the ownership of all basketball decisions. She can go back to business operations with Linda.
Finally, allow those two to hire a proper president of basketball operations and between those 3, they can make decisions.

They could always sell the team to a big-pocket owner who doesn't care about luxury tax issues.
The Clippers went for a lot. The Broncos are going to go for more than 5 billion.
This is the Lakers. If this team ever went up for sale, they'd probably go for at least what the Broncos will sell for.

She's trying to take the heat off for that trade deadline move.
https://lakersdaily.com/report-lakers-discussed-potential-deal-with-rockets-involving-russell-westbrook-john-wall-and-christan-wood/
Lakers were going to send Westbrook, THT, FRP to Rockets to get Wall and Wood..
Jeannie didn't want to pay the extra $4m more in salary which would have been $24m more when including taxes..
Wall, Monk, Lebron, Davis, Wood -- Augustin, Reaves, SJ, Gabriel, Howard
Ultimately Lakers make the playoffs, especially because Davis injury would have had Wood to step up in his absence. Lakers may still be in the playoffs right now.
She wouldn't have foreseen that Davis and Nunn would not be around and Lebron would be injured.. so her decision there looks a lot worse in hindsight. Remember those jabs by LeBron being disappointed there was no moves where he was praising other FOs? That's what it was about.

A summary of the feelings on Jeannie's comments, seems to be something many groups in media are in agreement on - the issues of running a franchise as a family business in 2022.

Seems to me Jesse and Joey inherited the basketball knowledge that Dr. Buss had while the rest of his children are idiotic trust fund babies playing Hollywood in LA.

Prediction: Our next coach will not last more than 3 years... i know, hardly prophetic. I have zero faith this FO will get anything right. The ship is sinking fast and there's an obvious leak that no one wants to address. Somehow they thought that firing Vogel would stop a sinking ship. I have as much faith in Phil's personnel decisions as I have in James Dolan's.

It sounds like Phil is advocating ridding the team of LeBron, the team's most tradeable asset and the one player who could bring back a haul of assets (players and draft picks), and build the team around Westbrook. While I do believe that earlier in his career Westbrook would have benefited and actually excelled in the triangle offense, it is now 2022 and spacing on offense, three point shooting, and perimeter defense are all now needed to win in today's NBA. Does this mean that Westbrook and AD will be the two cornerstones of the franchise moving forward? With AD and his history of injury, the adage "your best ability is your availability" definitely would not apply. Also, AD seems to have issues about being asked to play center (AD is bigger and more skilled than Draymond Green and Draymond Green moves over from power forward to center when he is asked to do so). What is AD's issue with not wanting to play center?
Does any of this make any sense? How much influence does Phil have on both roster construction and whom the team hires as the next head coach?
Can Westbrook as the centerpiece of the next iteration of the Lakers become effective and more efficient?
Lastly, why get rid of only LeBron and not AD and Westbrook? Is it because nobody wants Westbrook (and that does make sense)? While LeBron may be a polarizing figure, especially when it comes to roster construction (getting rid of Hart, Ingram, Ball, draft picks for AD and Kuzma, trading for Westbrook, not getting Buddy Hield, and not keep Caruso), he does, at least, show up for the majority of the season and plays hard. We cannot say the same about AD.
While it all sounds bizarre to me, Westbrook's contract does come off the books after next season, freeing up lots of cap space.

Please don't forget that they also refused to pay Alex Caruso who played great defense and shot 40% from 3 the previous season.
Also didn't want to pay Scotty Brooks, a coach who knew how to coach Russ and maximize his abilities(instead they just promoted Penberthy who didn't have any experience as a legit assistant, to save money)
all because of what? didn't want to pay a "large tax bill unlike smaller market teams like the Clips, Bucks, Nets?
Payroll and luxury taxes
1 Golden State Warriors 15 $175,192,325 luxury taxes due $170,331,206
2 Brooklyn Nets 15 $157,847,950 ----- tax due $97,731,568
3 Los Angeles Clippers 15 $164,493,220 ---- tax due $83,114,696
4 Milwaukee Bucks 15 $153,526,626 ---- tax due $58,647,698
5 Los Angeles Lakers 15 $148,106,001 --- tax due $45,113,318
I am not saying spend recklessly that can compromise their spending abilities in the future. Coaches salaries don't even count in the tax bill. Christian Wood's contract will expire in 2 years, Alex Caruso didn't asked for too much and still is tradeable if you must but... no
, we're sticking to the budget and... be disappointed that they didn't get in the playoffs? Re: Coaching and GM Changes - Update: Vogel fired, Pelinka next?

Pretty obvious the team is deliberately leaking to Woj so he gives them favorable coverage, started with leaking to him that Vogel was getting fired.

I remember Jeannie a Woj report, then a couple of days later Woj wrote a scathing article of how bad the Lakers have been Post Kobe, citing their bad losses etc. Then there was silence from both camps, then boom Woj now have exclusive scoops about the Lakers, which players and coaches they sign waay ahead of any reporters.
