No guarantee J Brunson is leaving Dallas. We need to get Cade a player for the 1 or 2 positions if we do not get one in the draft.
To me I would go after M Monk or Tyus Jones. Two players that are looking for starting minutes and is better that anything other than Cade we have in the PG/SG position.

We definitely don't need two threads with Jalen Brunson's name in the title.

Or they could trade Grant for a playmaker, or they could get said player next year.

Make a valid attempt at him or monk (different contract values), but I don’t see either as being absolutely necessary.

Re: J Brunson Backup Plan
We’re going to see rather quickly, after the draft and free agency, if Weaver’s plan is to compete for a playoff spot or tank another year.
If we focus on youngsters (trade Grant for another lotto pick, pick developmental guys like Chet, Sharpe, Eason, Daniels), and leave obvious flaws on the roster (starting center, starting guard), we’re stealth tanking for another year.
If we trade Grant for a better fitting starter (or don’t trade him at all) and sign vets such as Brunson or Mitchell, and we draft more ready-to-contribute guys (Jabari, Paolo, Mathurin, Murray), then we’re trying to start winning.
There’s no right answer. I prefer the first scenario, but I understand if it’s time to get some wins.

I think the right answer is be patient one more season and run with the young guys. You just get the highest ceiling on the team through the draft no question IMO.
Of course making a move now does raise the floor of the team which has value. We currently are armed with a high pick,Grant, and a bunch of cap space. I mean if need be we could consider moving a Bey/Stewart as well. We surely have the ammo to be a contender in anyone on the market its just a matter of will they be ok playing here.

Surely organisations do their due diligence and find out if a player actually wants to join the franchise prior to making the trade?
As fans we might think we can go get any player but as several trades show there's usually a short list of teams players prefer with

Re: J Brunson Backup Plan
Obviously if you can get Brunson as a FA without giving up assets that would be a no brainer.
Weaver could try to get Simons from Portland in a Grant trade. The rumor is the Blazers want both klutch clients Grant and Zach Lavine so maybe Simons' days are numbered in Portland?
As already mentioned by OP both Monk and Tyus are options that could potentially be more affordable. These are guys looking for starters' minutes which would be helpful while the core is developing.
I would avoid Sexton. He's going to be expensive and throwing big money at a small guard that missed the season coming off meniscus surgery just seems like a trap considering his entire game relies on athleticism.
