Trade Bait . . . Carlos Beltran?

Post#1 » by HarthorneWingo » Tue Oct 2, 2007 3:41 am

If you heard Mike and Mad Dog's interview of Ed Coleman today on the WFAN (you can still listen to it by going to the site and clicking on the link), you then heard Coleman (who, admittedly, is not a Beltran fan) and the boys speculate that Carlos could be a chip for the Mets to use in the quest for some solid starting pitching. They noted that Beltran's contract is not so prohibitive to the smaller market teams these days given the present market (see Soriano, Carlos Lee). They also said that the Mets should do whatever it takes now to make the trade with Minnesota for Johann Santana happen. I agree. Milledge, Pelfrey, Humber, maybe even Perez have to be considered as bait.

Given that both Tori Hunter and Aaron Rowand (Philly is not expected to re-sign him - believe it or not - and the White Sox are expected to make a big push for him) will be available on the free agent market, if we do decide to use Beltran to acquire some top notch pitching, now may be the time to do it.

Hmm. I'd rather not do that. Warts and all, I like Beltran.

Beltran makes $18.5 million a year for the next 4 years. That contract is the very definition of prohibitive to smaller market teams. Unless the Mets eat a good deal of that contract (not to mention they are giving him deferred money until 2050 it seems), he isn't going anywhere. Ed Coleman is blowing smoke.

why on earth do we trade the all around best CFer in the game?

Gold Glove D, Terrific Baserunner, Extremely Fast, Good Arm, Above Avg in the Clutch Department, Plays through pain, dude is still 30, he has plenty of prime left

06: 140 gp 127 runs 38doubles 41hrs 116rbis 275avg 18/21 sb's 388obp
07: 144 gp 93runs 33doubles 33 hrs 112rbi 276avg 23/25 sb's 353obp

07: Andruw Jones .222 26hrs 94rbi 311obp 138k's gold glove d also 30yo
07: Hunter .287 28hr 107rbi 334obp 18/27sb's 45dbls gold glove d 32yo

makes no sense trading beltran, he had better years than both of these guys while playing banged up, he fits in, hes humble/quiet, hes proved himself asa met, he was ona tear during our sh*t sept, he wants to win.. why trade the players who actually performed??

Honestly remember the Colon for Sizemore, Phillips and Lee deal? Its going to take more then that to land Santana. Forget about him at this point. For Beltran being trade bait, why? He is still in his prime and contract that last for some time. He plays the OF great and is still a legit 275-30-100 hitter. I dont want to trade him...
