Re: 2022 NBA Draft Thread
Interesting. I wonder if we could get a 3-time MVP with our 3rd rounder?

Caleb Swanigan is a name that comes to mind in terms of drastic weight loss before the draft that couldn't sustain it afterwards. But Lofton looks on the right track for sure. He's listed as 6'7 and 275lbs currently, we'll see where he's at the combine.
Caleb Swanigan, Omari Spellman, and Jared Sullinger are three guys who temporarily lost weight to make it to the NBA, only to put it back on and quickly find themselves out of the league.
Guys with that body type almost never keep the weight off, especially when they're making NBA money and have all the comforts that come along with it. Not worth the risk unless the talent is off the charts.

Certainly something to be concerned about. All of the players mentioned had the talent, yet couldn't keep their weight off. While the jury is still out on Zion, he could follow them out the door. I am inclined to take a pass as well. It is especially worrisome that Lofton only made an effort to lose weight to increase his chance of getting drafted. In college where was the effort to get/stay in shape?

Fair point. I don't really have a rebuttal to that without being in the room when he does his interviews and hearing his response to that question (I assume it will come up).

My bad. Thought he was a sleeper.
Robinson is a sleeper. He's ranked 71st right now on ESPN.
I don't think nbadraft.net is a very legit site.
I mean you never know, he could go 26. But consensus has him going either late 2nd round or undrafted at this point.
Excuse me? NBADraft.net also posts a "consensus" mock, and it that one he's ranked 30th-- still in the first round.

Come in, give us some buckets off the bench.
He's got a quick first step, good handle, shifty, quick twitch athleticism.
Defense is good not great. passing is good not great, size is good not great. Shooting is good, not great.
but he's potentially a guy who could get us a consistent 10 pts a game off the bench once he's developed.

Speaking of weird body types, whatever happened to RaiQuan Gray from Florida State drafted #59 by the Nets in 2021. 6-8, 265 but excellent handles and a good passer; he was a point guard in high school. He has decent G-league stats. Is he still the Nets property?

He's under contract, not with the brooklyn nets but with their g league team. so they own his rights, in the same way we own the rights to clemons, valentine and our other g league guys. meaning any NBA team can offer him a better deal (as either a 2 way guy or a full roster spot) and he would just take that obviously instead of staying on the nets g league team.
or the nets can choose to offer him an upgraded deal.

it's funny you mention that.
i was watching some videos of some sleeper prospects the other day and there's one in particular who will likely be there at 53 - who does remind me of tatum. obviously not as good, not as explosive, athletic or skilled. BUT the size, the frame, the way he moves on the court, some of the moves he makes with the ball. he's like tatum but not as good...at least not yet..he is 2 yrs younger than tatum, after all.
his name?
tyler burton from Richmond.
poor man's tatum.
Oh and he's a local kid too. From Uxbridge, MA. Played at Marianapolis Prep in CT. Played AAU for Mass Elite and Rivals Basketball Club.
His defense does scare me a little bit. But he's on the list for the g league ignite camp next week. If he looks good there (especially on D) I'll be onboard with us picking him.

Since our reining back-to-back MVP of the NBA was a second round pick maybe just maybe..

Sometimes betting on an out of shape player in the second round can pay off.
Speaking of centers that can really pass, Trevion Williams has some really fun dimes and we now Stevens likes bigs who can pass. The free throw shooting and defense are yikes level however.

Yikes level defense is not what any team needs. Add in yikes level free throw shooting, and one has to look elsewhere. There will certainly be players available who are decent free throw shooters, and who have more potential on the defensive side than Williams. One such player who could well be available when we draft is Gabe Brown from Michigan State. Good defender, 38% 3-point shooter, 90% from the FT line. His rebounding isn't great, but I'm betting if it was he would be going higher. Tom Izzo described him as the heart and soul of the team.

Re: 2022 NBA Draft Thread
Gabe Brown I can get behind. He has NBA size and length. He sounds like a mature guy that has enough self awareness to stick to his role in the NBA and not whine about minutes/touches. Always a plus when you have a coach like Tom Izzo vouch for you. From the video, it really sticks out how quick he is to make the extra pass. Seems like he would have no problem adjusting to a .5 system. For what it's worth, earlier in the year, Envergure, a french media specialized in the NBA draft had him as one of five advanced stats sleepers on the wing that might have a NBA future (also on that list, my guy, Vince Williams by the way). That free throw percentage is sexy as hell and he has a very decent percentage from three on big volume.

With the 53rd pick the Boston Celtics select : Johnny Juzang UCLA transfer from Kentucky .
Now I'll tell you why 21 years old been battle tested and imo will spark nesmith into playing for his spot on the roster it's 53 so that's where I'd go unless someone fell. I actually think the dude could be special.

I like Juzang. He reminds me a little bit of Caris LeVert (edit). Not exactly what the Celtics need but I would be okay with him at 53 if he is still on the board. Somehow I don't think he will be.
Edit: Extend Mazzulla
