Upgrade to what? The 11th overall pick to the 13th pick?
Why spend money on expensive veteran FAs when your roster is barely competitive for the Play-In and nowhere near competing for a championship?
In the very high likelihood we’re still bad next year, you’ll have yet another longterm expensive contract on the books.
Then what? What about the year after that?
Personally if I’m GM my #1 priority is to take Burks away from Thibs. Force him to start IQ with the only backup plan D. Rose (for the 40 games he’s healthy) + Deuce. But they’re probably not on that wavelength and will keep on being super Knicksy by adding longterm veteran contracts to bad teams in the delusional hope that it will magically unlock MSG as a FA destination for hypothetical A-list FAs who may or may not come available over the next few years.
Signing Brunson would be exactly the same as the THJ contract and the (first) Randle contract. Spending money for money’s sake instead of just focusing on internal development and longterm asset management. The purpose of Brunson wouldn’t be to win. It would be to sell the media and season ticket holders on the lie that the Knicks are back.
Until you can name a decent (in your eyes) gettable PG in the NBA for under $15M, your complaints ring hollow.
We currently have RJ = an inefficient left-hand dominant shooting guard who's not all that great a shooter (but tries, he's improving) and a one-season wonder PF who's back to pouting as our #1 and #2 guys. On any other team they'd be far down on list, maybe not even starters.
Both ball dominant and inefficient. Neither is leading us to the second round let alone a title series. And our 3rd best player is a non-shooting center.
We don't even have a top 50 player on the team. And getting a good young PG is too expensive?
How much will RJ and Randle cost on their new contracts? Is that the team you want to see built and filled in with inexpensive subs and draftees?
