He's right. It's pretty delusional to think the leagues were even remotely as competitive as they are today.

The amount of people trying to play in the NBA, even just within America not even getting into international competition, is multiple times higher than the 50s.

And as the league becomes more and more accessible globally, it will become even more competitive.

Cousy's highlight videos would look like a joke compared to players today and entertaining the idea that it's even a remotely similar level is a joke. You can pay respect to past players without pretending like this.

I mean… Redick was right. The average player then wouldn’t sniff a team now.

The NBA today has the best athletes from around the world they'd generally be able to out run and out jump most of them today.

If those guys played in this era with the access to training and science and diet not to mention money that todays players have, don’t you think they’d be athletic freaks too? Talent is talent imo no matter what era you play in.

Ironically JJ Redick is the one who had the silly side gig while he was playing, not Cousy. In 40 years we can slander today's players by saying they played against podcasters and wannabe fashion models. I'll take the firefighters over this gen

They'd be more athletic but they are still being selected from a tiny talent pool.

Redick would've been playing beer pong at age 30 after his **** office job if it weren't for people like Bob Cousy who paved the way for the blessed career he has today

glad he got put in his place. Bob Cousy hasn't touched the court as a player in over 50 years and you're still talking about him JJ

no one is going to be talking about JJ Redick's play on the court in 50 years, I can assure that

Honestly, he is amazing at his new job, this is just one of those moments where he wanted to defend his peers and went a little too far in the heat of the moment.

I think this is literally the only place I’ve seen besides some right wing subreddit that’s trashed Redick for him clapping back at notorious douchebag Chris Russo

Just ask yourself this, would you want the former MVP Bob Cousy from 56/57 running point for your team in 2022?

No, no you wouldn't

You wouldn't want Aristotle teaching high school biology or Isaac Newton teaching high school physics either. Doesn't mean a high school teacher has anything to feel great about in comparing themselves to them

After the NBA moves to the four-point line from 32 feet and league percentages get up to 35 percent, people will make fun of douchey ol JJ Redick who only did one thing that now everybody does better.

Cousy couldn't control who was out there on the court with him, but he ran circles around those who were.

Same bro - I thought he's been dead for like 25 years. Glad to see he's alive and kicking

Cousy was playing 18 holes of golf into his late 80s, until he had back surgery.

This is Cousy at 66 in dress clothes. And the Nick Nolte line "Don't you ever miss?" is entirely ad-libbed.

This is such an old tired discussion... yet it seems so damn simple.

1) The NBA in 2022 has more talented/skilled players than those from 50 or 60 or 70 years ago. Maybe 99% of them. Maybe 100%.
2) The NBA player in 20xx has so many modern advantages in training, nutrition, equipment, sleep science, analytics, travel convenience, et al that it makes any real comparison impossible.

Both of those things can be true. Both of those things are true.

Just think of these things the next time this debate comes up...

- They played in Chuck Taylors. How many of you own a pair of Chucks? Wonderful shoe. I dig them. But I'd NEVER even consider playing basketball in them. They're atrocious as an athletic shoe.
- They rode buses or commercial flights for most of the games. And the black players weren't even allowed to stay at the same hotel or eat at the restaurants as their white teammates in many cities.

A lot has changed over the years. It's ok to acknowledge it... and use context to understand the differences.
