The Lakers can't get one right decision since being champions, can they?

Being in Los Angeles is a competitive advantage. The only teams with similar competitive advantages are the Clippers, Knicks and Nets who have historically squandered it. The Lakers didn't. They typically had shrewd management that with their competitive advantage made them a juggernaut. You can make a very good case that the 80s Lakers had two of the three greatest basketball executives involved in decision making: West and Riley.

The quality of Lakers management slowly degraded this century. It still had gasps of insight: Pau trade, vetoed Paul acquisition. But overall they have become a dimbulb franchise. Unlike any of their other titles I don't think they would have won in 2020 if they were based in Dallas.

And with Clippers management steadily improving, combined with their much deeper pockets, they face some real risks going forward.

They should just have Lebron James be a player/head coach for next season at this point. No one with common sense would take such a dead end head coaching job like the Lakers. When they lose even more games next year, the media will put most of the blame on the coach despite of the fact that even prime Pat Riley or Greg Popovich wouldn't be able to coach this terribly contructed roster to the playoffs. Even tho I have many problems with James Harden and the fact the guy is simply not a winner, The 76ers will still have Joel Emiid and Tyese Maxey should improve as a player. Harris is a very good player as well. I don't see how Doc Rivers would take a Lakers head coaching job over staying with the 76ers(unless the 76ers fire Rivers and even then, there's still a few teams without Head Coach at the moment and they are all better option than the Lakers head coaching job).

Perfect choice for a veteran star used to getting what they want. Doc loves veterans and is totally supportive of them.

But that’s the deal. For the time being LeBron, with some AD, is the Lakers. He gets what he wants. Or he goes back to Cleveland.

He may command respect from Lebron, Davis and Westbrook is probably one of the biggest reasons. I believe Lakers may want him if Rivers doesn't break the bank and cost anything more than a 2nd round pick. LA would be crazy to give him a raise or give up a first rounder for him.

Rivers has proven he can win with aging stars (PP/KG/RA) and get them to buy in. Honestly, I can state that I never thought Rivers underachieved with the Celtics. The series they lost such as Orlando/Lakers/Heat, they all lost for reasons other than Rivers coaching.

Maybe another coach could have done better getting Harden to return closer to his old form but this Philly roster when it comes to their bench was a trainwreck.

LeBron is the coach anyways, the bigger concern is the roster construction and finding a spot to pawn off Russ

Doc is getting giant parachute after parachute every time he shows his incompetence as a coach... I can't think any coach who has this many fumbles and living on the past glory. His media and around league buddies guarantee he is going to pest teams for foreseeable future.
