He is the last NBA player standing who is older than me. Once he’s gone I will be older than every nba player I ever watch for the rest of my life. I hope he hangs onto this mascot role of his as long as he can

My man has the sweetest gig in the league. Tons of money, travel all paid for, and just chilling on the bench without the headaches of being a coach or assistant coach. And not for a year or two or three ... for over a decade.
Truth is on the side of the oppressed.

If it's really based on a promise, then it's a CBA violation. But we all known only a small fraction of those are penalized. (And has there ever been a major penalty other than in the Minny/Joe Smith case?)

Not at all. A “promise” that you have a spot as long as you want to play is not against the CBA.

If he got promised 10 million dollar contracts at this age that would be another thing.

Understandable that you were blown away by a guy who averaged 48.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per 36 minutes in 2020-21.

Riley is still paying him salary for taking a paycut in Miami Big 3 era.

I always figured somewhere along the way a deal was made so low to save cap space, and he was going to become an assistant anyway, that they added in a backdoor, multiyear deal just to save cap space one time. Cap circumvention.

We whine when players leave their current team. We rarely question how the team contributed to the situation. Basketball players are people. Realgm doesn't always get that but the Heat get it. How you treat people matters. I'm guessing the way the Heat runs their business plays quite well in player and agent circles.

We know what it is. The only dispute is about the price.

They kept showing him kneeling on the sidelines last night and every time I was just praying the old man's knees would be able to stand back up. Dude is 42, they gotta get him a nice cushioned seat or something. Elder abuse to have him on the floor like that lol

He's an assistant coach on a minimum, hence the league pays part of his contract

I think the Heat play better than the sum of their parts and culture is a big part of this. Haslem is a massive part of that culture and leadership. That’s why and how.

Same here and I did not know this depressing fact until you pointed it out to me. Lebron being the 4th oldest guy in the NBA makes me feel ancient because I remember this SI cover like yesterday.

Joe Smith's incident was in writing. They actually had it in his contract that they were violating the CBA. However the Haslem deal with the heat are like the mob, it's a story and lie and doesn't exist and theres nothing you can say or show will change it. Got it you narc.

And now, your monthly "Haslem is old" thread.

These get very tiring. He's a culture guy. That's why he's still with the team. That should be enough...

I only need to lose about 40 more lbs and I'll be back in the running for a spot.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2013/02/15/michael-jordan-playing-weight-espn/1922419/

In Indiana, he starts thinking about 218.

Every morning since returning from the islands, he's been in the gym. At mealtime he texts his nutritionist to find out what he can and can't eat. Ostensibly, the reason is that he stepped on a scale after leaving the excess palace of Mister Terrible and saw this number staring back: 261. Nine days later, sitting in his office and surrounded by basketball, he's down to 248. He'll claim it's about health, or looking good for his 50th birthday party. But in his mind, there's a target: 218, a familiar and dangerous number in Boomershadow's world.

That's his playing weight.

What I don't get about these serious threads, it is fun to joke about, is the Heat are a very successful franchise.

They have 21 playoff appearances in 27 years, 13 50 win seasons (pro-rated for shortened seasons), 9 CF appearances, 6 Final appearances and 3 titles. They're not in NY or LA but have consistently been able to sign top level players over this span, including a GOAT level player, and have re-tooled multiple times. Miami established it knows what it is doing.

Rather than mock them for using a last roster spot on a trusted man who is really a player-coach we should ask "should other teams do this?
