play GM: what roster would you create for 2022/23?

Post#1 » by drsd » Thu May 26, 2022 12:24 pm

Managmentt is in the most fun part of their year were they can balance the draft, free agency (in both directions) and the trade market.

What realistic roster would you propose for Orlando to start the 2022/23 campaign?

For me, I am assuming the Magic will draft a PF and sign a FA SG. So, how about this to kick things off.

#1 - Jabari Smith
#32 - Leonard Miller (for Lakland 2W)
#35 - Ismael Kamagate (for draft-N-stash rights)

Trade Bamba (SnT) for Oladipo (SnT); or let Bamba walk and sign Oladipo - same result.

Re-up Cannady, Bol and M-Wagner

Trade Isaac and Ross for a future assets. Sign Markieff Morris to 1/2 MLE deal. SIgn Montrezl Harrell to 1/2 MLE deal. Sign Yuta Watanabe on a LLE deal.

Our opening night roster:

Fultz/Anthony/Cannady
Oladipo/Suggs/Hampton
F-Wagner/Okeke/Watanabe
Smith/Morris/Bol
Carter/Harrell/M-Wagner

Leonard Miller on 2W standby.

Select Jabari at 1

Trade 32 & 35 to GSW for 28, also (separate-but not) SnT Bamba, RJ & DEN 25 frp to GSW for Wiseman & Moody, saves them cap and Bamba could fit better next to Draymond on D, shooting open 3's on the other end. Not necessarily a starter, but a potential matchup nightmare

Sign Victor Oladipo for 15m/3 years, more $$ than MLE only teams, more years for his security, and opportunity to showcase. Re-up M. Wagner.

Trade TRoss into BOS TPE (from our boy Evan) to give them more vet firepower for Aaron Nesmith (worth a shot-literally)

Draft Wendell Moore from Duke at 28

...so, out:Ross, Bamba, RJ, DEN '25 frp, two '22 srp's, Bol, RoLo, Cannady etc
in:Oladipo, Wiseman, Moody, Nesmith, Wendell Moore

WCJ/Isaac/Wiseman
Jabari/Okeke/M. Wagner
Franz/Moody/Nesmith
Oladipo/Cole/Moore
Fultz/Suggs

LOTS of versatility and different looks, ridiculous defensive potential, big upside guys given an opportunity in a developing environment, A lot more shooting than we've had...all without breaking the bank. Suddenly heavy with long 3&D wings-the key to NBA in this era. Not too excited about Wiseman, but wanted the Moody & the frpick and, obviously, he's a very high upside prospect if healthy. Cole learns from a formerly wild mentor that learned how to play the right way (Oladipo).

This is going to sound crazyyyy but I think we run it back. Adding the first overall pick (Smith) and Isaac with virtually the same roster can not only give our young guys another year to develop but I believe will get us 35+ wins. I know 35 wins is not the goal but we are talking a 1 year turnaround from 22. We tanked hard last year and were obviously very injured. I think this roster is actually a lot better than most think it is.

We trade Ross and the 2nd's for a late first and stash him.

Fultz/Anthony
Harris/Suggs/Hampton
Wagner/Okeke
Smith/Isaac
Carter/Bamba/Wagner

Cole/suggs/isaac/Bamba as our main 4 off the bench would be a solid 2nd unit and allow them to hopefully flourish in a less demanding role. Obviously with the long term goal of starting Suggs.

Okeke and Hampton will get their time with injuries (minor hopefully) but its part of the game.

I could be 100% off.

I'll try to keep that realistic

-draft chet or jabari at # 1.

-draft procida with a second round pick and let him in europe
-trade the other pick for....a future SRP,keeping up the tradition, lol(seriously,we do not need more young rn)

-most important:trade Cole Anthony on draft night for whatever you'd get;idem t.ross.
let bamba leave in free agency

-re-sign G.Harris and sign a good 3 point shooter as franz wagner back up,caleb martin or someone like him

basically something like like this

Suggs-Fultz

Hampton-g.harris

F.Wagner-c.martin

J.Smith-Okeke

WCJ-M.Wagner

A)28 minutes of Suggs as starter cause, like it or not,he is our franchise player and he needs a fair chance as a leader

B)20 minutes of Fultz from the bench, letting him doing his things at his own tempo.

C)Work as hard as you can in summer, that is basically the only important thing in our position as a franchise, internal player development

D) Make them defend as obsessed people, only way to be competitive next year

this is what I fear they will do (or not do) as a Magic fan
*also, probably exactly what they'll do

Chet or Jabari will depend on Chet’s workout with us. If he can show an offensive game, as a scorer.

Trade Cole, Hampton, Okeke, 35 and Ross for the best available talent.

Dipo is not the kind of vet I’d be adding to our roster at this stage in the rebuild. I want as many shot creating/playmaking reps going to Suggs/Franz as possible. Including our incoming rookie as well.

Gary was the perfect vet last year. Excellent locker room guy who was more than willing to play a defending and spot up role for us last year .

If not Gary, I’d be looking to target vets of similar stature.

tbh i think weham will be even more conservative than me,basically keeping anyone and not making any move(as always :banghead: )

that said, reality is,imho :if you draft at #5 and #8 one year,at #1 next year, you have to build around those picks, can not do anything else.

We have a lot of talent right now, i see no reason for tanking anymore. This number one pick is a game changer ! We should aim for the play in. I would try to be smart about next season. We want to win, but we want to win on the back of our young core. We need veterans but they have to be good decision makers and shooters.

1. I would trade Anthony, Ross, Hampton and Bamba for future picks.
2. I would resign Garry Harris at mle.
3. I would draft Banchero and Laravia.
4. Sign Lopez, Gravett, Cannady and Schofield

Suggs/Fultz/Gravett
Wagner/Harris/Cannady
Banchero/ Laravia/Schofield
Isaac/Okeke
WCJ/Wagner/Lopez

If this lineup doesnt work i would go with Suggs/Harris/Wagner/Banchero/WCJ or Suggs/Harris/Wagner/Banchero/Isaac.
Its very switchable lineup with multiple ball handlers, at least average shooters, good passers and decision makers.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Ayton couldn't get it done with CP3 and Devin Booker, no way I'm giving up that much and relying on him.

Acquire proven talent, like mentioned Ayton or Brunson, or any other that can be signed or traded for and build around Franz and 1st pick in this draft.

I'll play along. I love these threads lol. Thanks drsd for this one.

Jabari with the #1 pick.
Bamba is coming back and on a somewhat reasonable long termish deal.
Keeping mo wagner.
Keeping cannaday on a 2 way expecting him in Lakeland.
Signing MCW for the end of the bench Swiss army knife fill in wherever needed at the 1,2,3 spots.
And here's the taking a gamble- trading TRoss (because he wants out) with both of this years seconds along with the more favorable of next year's 1st round pick(top 7 protected) and the less favorable of ours and Denver 1st round pick for mathurin in this year's draft.

A couple of notes. Fultz is the starting pg. Suggs is not a starter until he can crack 30% at the 3. Fultz, Isaac, and bamba only play 20-28 mpg. 2 of those 3 should be on court to end any close games.

Depth chart

Fultz/suggs
Mathurin/RJ
Franz/chuma
Jabari/Isaac
WCJ/Bamba

End of bench
Cole
MCW
Mo Wagner

Totally unrealistic and would never happen but here’s what I would do.

- Draft Jabari Smith #1

- Trade Fultz to the clippers for Terrence Mann and Norman Powell http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2fby2bf7

-Do not resign Harris

-Trade Ross + both second round picks to Minnesota for Beasley and the 19th pick in the draft. http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yfn5suad

- Draft Eason/Agbaji/Moore with #19

-Possibly throw a Free Agent offer at Simons

Suggs/Cole
Beasley/#19/Mann
Wagner/Powell/Okeke
Smith/Isaac/Okeke
WCJr/Wagner

Re-sign Harris and Bamba (Look to deal Bamba for a better fitting piece). Sign TJ Warren. Trade Ross and second round picks for late first round pick to take Kessler. I’d look to unload Cole but I don’t want to give him away either. It would be nice to get some value for him. If possible, unload Cole, Hampton, Okeke, and TRoss for some sort of value.

Fultz/Cole
Suggs/Harris/Hampton
Franz/TJ Warren/Okeke
Jabari/Isaac
WCJ/Kessler/Bamba

-Draft Jabari at 1

-Trade Ross with the 32 & 35th pick to Brooklyn or Milwaukee 1st rounder (23 or 24th) and hope one of the guards from the bunch projected in the teens drops

-Resign Gary Harris to a 2/22 mil deal with a Team Option 2nd yr

-Sign & Trade Bamba for whatever you can get

-Get a veteran center to provide guidance and be a locker room presence to a 1 yr deal

-Look at trade options for Cole Anthony

PG: Fultz, Cole, Rookie Guard
SG: Suggs, Harris, Hampton
SF: Franz, Okeke
PF: Jabari, Isaac, Bol Bol
C: WCJ, Vet Center, Mo Wagner

This should set the Magic to be big time players next season during free agency.

•Draft Jabari #1
•trade Ross and our 2nd Rd picks for a future first
•Sign Zach Lavine
• Try and SNT Bamba or let walk
Fill out the rest of the roster with solid vets

Fultz, Anthony, Hampton
Lavine, Suggs, Vet
F. Wagner, Okeke, vet
Jabari, Isaac, vet
Carter jr., M. Wagner, vet

I think this team could grow very nicely together into the future and whoever isn’t fitting in can be good trade bait to get us some future assets or solid bench depth.

Return to Orlando Magic
