If we view offense and defense equally

Post#1 » by Cavsfansince84 » Fri May 27, 2022 2:47 pm

Who are the top 5 guards in nba history? Also, for the purposes of this thread let's narrow it to top 5 seasons for all players. Give as much emphasis to ps vs rs as you want.

Jerry West would be the GOAT.

Are you that confident in rating him above MJ?

I'm not sure I would go that far but it would be pretty close for sure.

Well, not that confident, but I think MJ would be his only competition.

Would you still have Oscar in your top 5?

Chamberlain would definitely be the best ever.

Good question, that's tough to say. I don't think we know enough about prime Oscar defense to draw a clear conclusion. Gun to my head, I'd say yes because he was still amazing on offense and likely clearly above average on defense.

Would he be better than Walt Frazier? Or even Jason Kidd? That's a tough thought experiment.

I don't think I rate Kidd's offense high enough to have him in my top 5. There is still prime Wade and Kobe to factor in.

True, Wade and Kobe would be high as well. What about Paul?

He's definitely in there as well. I'd probably have him ahead of Kobe tbh. I feel like MJ and West are locks then it might be CP3, Frazier and Wade. Its so close from 3 to about 7 though. There's also Payton.

This is strictly for guards. Playmaking centers don't qualify.

Can somebody explain to me this idea of offense and defense being unequal? Considering they are inherently connected together. I don’t even see how you separate them.

Most people imo don't rate defense near to equal to offense in bb, especially for guards. Maybe for centers. Which is to say that a guard who is average on offense but great on defense isn't valued near as highly as one that is great on offense and average on defense.
