No one asked him if he thought they would win Game 7. He added that unprompted.

Let me be clear, I have zero problem with him saying it, in fact I think it's great and shows the type of player and leader that Butler is.

But let's not pretend he had to either say they're going to win it or say they're going to lose it. He didn't have to say anything at all about it.

Was looking for this common sense post.

If it was indeed unprompted (there was no question about who would win game 7), then all he had to say was "we were fortunate to play well enough to get the Win tonight. And, we will go back and prepare and focus and give ourselves the best chance to win game 7".

or something like that^ or not even mention game 7.

he went out of his way to make a prediction about game 7. He didn't have to do that. It was probably pre-meditated. Maybe he wants that pressure.

I watch a lot of UFC and every single fighter promises a victory, usually a knockout. Butler is just a confident dude and he wants to put the pressure on his team to win.

Some of the replies in this thread are emblematic of the softening of the NBA.

That quote after that performance is what makes it cool. Excited for tomorrow.

Saying that just look like a win-win to me.

If they win, people get all excited about how badass he is.
If they lose, people still applaud the fact that he's putting himself on the line

Saying these type of things ultimately means nothing about who's going to win or not.

He's actually one of the least criticized. He can score single digits and no one will say anything negative about his single digit scoring effort.

Because single digits is what he SHOULD be scoring. He's a limited role player (albeit a good one) that plays like MJ In the playoffs, but should be no better than Oladipo on paper. 15ppg is what he should be giving you. He rarely underperforms and consistently way over performs

Do people really think a star player in the Conference Finals is going to play much harder because he told reporters that his team would win?

This loss is on Jimmy. The karma police would not allow it after such an arrogant and unsportsmanlike public declaration.

I'd pay money to have a reporter ask "Jimmy, you said you were going to win game 7. Why did you lie?"

That was one of the worst shots I’ve ever seen a player take. Butler both carried them and buried them that game.
