If Pistons take Sharpe, they better have a whole lot more intel than what is currently out there. His uniform might as well be a red flag at this point.

Murray just seems like the best option. It's just not sexy.

I feel like if he's picked anywhere close to #5, that team either has great intel, or are not good at their job. The closer he gets to #10, the uncertainty factor is lessened, and you can gamble a little more. But I agree, if the Pistons take him at #5, it's with very strong intel.

Im hoping these Atl Grant rumors are true. If so I wouldn't mind us drafting Murray to then trade Grant for the 16th and Bogdanovic. Possibly draft Eason or Baldwin with that pick.

That lineup maybe one of the more unathletic teams in the league!

Mathurin is a sophomore though, as a freshman he had 13 dunks.

Someone who actually did qualify as a freshman though is Ben Mclemore, who I keep coming back for as a comp

Mathurin's '22 season is incorrectly listed as his freshman instead of sophomore but I thought this was an interesting list. Same query but added 3pt shooting and freshman/sophomores

Didn't we find out Ben Mclemore is actually 6-3, has a terribly low BBall IQ, and on top of that had some nagging foot injuries early in his career? Do you point to Ben Mclemore when talking about any SG who can shoot and dunk in college?

No, I point to Mclemore when it’s an off ball SG who despite being a fantastic athlete has very little defensive impact, little on ball offensive skills and very little wiggle on their drives.

3+D SG’s who don’t project as strong defenders and are reliant upon being outstanding 3pt shooters to provide value

If you broke down the percentages for the Pistons between Murray, Shaedon Sharpe and Bennedict Mathurin, where do you put them? Good pod today, by the way. — @CopperCutters

First off, thank you for listening! I appreciate all of you subscribers who also listen to The Bun and Cardigan Show. The support is overwhelming.

OK, to the good stuff: This is hard to answer. I’m not trying to cop out, but the Pistons are still in the process of figuring all that out. I feel confident that if Detroit keeps the No. 5 pick, one of the three names you mentioned or Purdue’s Jaden Ivey will be coming to the Motor City.

Detroit is working under the assumption that Chet Holmgren, Smith, Banchero and one of Murray, Ivey or Sharpe will be gone by the time they’re on the clock. Everything I’ve heard is that several decision-makers in the Pistons’ front office really like Murray. The same goes for Mathurin. Ivey is the prospect I’ve heard mixed reviews about. Hot and cold. Sharpe, of course, is intriguing, but the lack of high-level film provides some hesitation. Detroit is spending this time trying to formulate an opinion on Sharpe, who, per sources, will be working out in Detroit within the next 10 days.

Right now, if I had to rank these prospects for Detroit, I’d go Murray, Mathurin/Sharpe and then Ivey. I’m not saying this can’t change as the draft inches closer. This is how I see the current big board, based on conversations over the past few weeks and months.

If the Pistons do trade Grant to Atlanta like you talked about in your latest column, who are some of the guys they would be looking at for the 16th pick? — @jakepietryga

Here are six names I’d look out for: Ohio State’s Malaki Branham, Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis, Santa Clara’s Jalen Williams, G League Ignite’s Jalen Hardy, LSU’s Tari Eason and Duke’s Mark Williams (although I think he’s the least likely of this group to be there at No. 16).

Another possibility for Detroit if it adds the 16th pick to go with No. 5 is to trade up into the top three. I’m looking at you, Houston Rockets.

Good stuff man. Honestly, it's starting to feel like that who Weaver picks at #5, is going to depend on of he can deal Grant for another pick and even a player. If he lands another high pick, he's gonna take Murray, and then Mathurin/Sharpe/Ivey with the second pick(7,8) if he ends up with a mid first for Grant, he's gonna pick a guard first(Mathurin/Sharpe/Ivey)as there will be bigs in that area available.

Atlanta is an interesting trade partner, and a pretty decent player could be coming back in that swap for Grant along with a pick. Atlanta is in a dicey situation, and they have to do something.

Yea , definitely sounds like the plan is one guard , one big/wing

They were floating around Bogdan Bogdanovic +16 for Grant, which is kinda interesting

I like Bogdan's fire for the game but he is 29/30 years old.

16 could become Eason, Duren, Mark Williams.

If healthy Bogdan would get A LOT of open looks next to Cade and Bey. He could be flipped after a good year to a contender on an expiring deal for a pick.

Its not the worst thing Ive seen, depends what 16 turns in to and how that player develops. I think 16 is too late for Mark Williams who I think will be a stud in the league. 20 years ago he goes #1 probably but the game has changed so much its all about 3 point shooting. I get it, 3>2, makes sense. But if we can get M.Williams at like 13 from the Hornets, Pistons will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Long, mobile bigs are still a necessary part of a winning team. Celtics have Williams and Heat have Bam as examples, these guys make the defense a lot better.

I really like that Atlanta trade idea getting back 16 and Bog's. There should he plenty of guards around that area of the draft if Weaver is hell bent on Murray at #5.

Yea, this is a fair point, but I’m not suggesting that just because they are similar prospects entering the draft that one is destined to follow the others career path.

But it should give people at least some pause and reason to examine why a prospect like Mclemore didn’t live up to expectations and look to see what makes Mathurin different. Maybe its because Mclemore was placed into a poor situation in Sacramento, maybe its because of his mentality and approach to the game, but it’s hard to know from a distance

I dont see why we have to take Murray if we make the Atl trade. First off the trade that was brought up in the first article mentioned Gallo and the pick or Bog+pick. Gallo only has 1 year so that would be a better get and he can slide into the 4. Even if its not Gallo we still would have another pick and free agency to go so its not like its do or die there.

Regardless of trade Grant or not I hope and think that Weaver is going his BAP pick 5. If he thinks its Murray who I disagree with I would hope he takes Murray even if we have Grant.

I'm currently hoping Sharpe nails his workout and Weaver targets him. Just seems like thats the pick that could be magical if we hit it.

Return to Detroit Pistons
