Paolo seems like the most likely to succeed regardless of talent and coaches around him while Chet and Jabari need specific players and systems to be successful.
I don't want our #1 pick to be dependent on the rest of the team and the coaching staff - we haven't had much success with either of those the past 10 years.
I have no doubt Paolo gonna succeed on the personal level. Getting big contracts & putting up good counting stats. I just doubt his team's gonna be successful with him as a No 1 option. Chet & Jabari I'm much more convinced they help you winning basketball games.
Well college seems to show something quite opposite. Paolo helped Duke get into top 4 of ncaa tournament while Jabari and Chet had very limited impact on winning.
dude, durant didnt get out of round 2 either. stop with the ncaa tourney success. also, did you see what auburn was rolling with outside of jabari? doubt they make the tourney without him.

That would be Chet. We can question his body all day but his defensive ability and IQ are through the roof.

I think Jabari would be closer to a Bam-type defender than Chet.thelead wrote:BadMofoPimp wrote:tiderulz wrote:nope. they are polar opposites

Nah. Jabari is my #1 but his defense is more like KD; great when it needs to be. He’s really good at that end but you’re not going to anchor your defense around him and funnel guys to him.

I will always question a rag doll body all day. Dude won't last long in this league.

I'm starting to zero in on Jabari being my #1, Paolo #2 and Chet closely at #3.

I am sorry that we dont have 10 years of nba level data on prospects. Best we have is college sample. Gelbe made some statements and current data while small shows something different so i pointed that out. Why he can be convinced about something without any proof and i can be sceptical about something with some proof ?
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Is that the best player in this draft?

Paolo is waaay more skilled than Randle at the same age. Paolo is better at creating for himself, creating for others, and shooting the ball (both from 3 and midrange). Body type and position are the biggest similarities between the two to me
Kentucky Randle had no finesse or skill in his game.. just bully ball. And despite that he still has had a decent NBA career and had a really nice all star year at his peak.. Paolo is much more talented than Randle IMO

Anthony Edwards was like 1-12 when he lost in the first-round of the conference tournament to end his college career.
I just watched extended highlights from Jabari's last game and the kept bodies on him the whole game so he couldn't catch a rhythm and they double-teamed him a lot.

Who wants to be like Dwight and get to a larger market vs who wants to build a legacy like Dirk with 1 team? Someone could be supremely talented but you know they won't stay long; that weighs into these decisions.
I think any true alpha superstar would want to leave Orlando unless they are international.
I’m hopeful this isn’t as much the case as during the Shaq/Howard eras if you can build a winning culture. Teams like the Bucks and Suns in the past would have seen an exodus of talent once they got good, and with the league shifting the rules and the internet helping to make people stars regardless of market, players seem to be embracing their (smaller) cities more.
One could argue this even started happening back when Howard left the Magic as they had some of this in place then. I’d argue it took a unique type of person to forgo another shot at a championship and his teammates over personal glory, and it’s no surprise the league, his teammates, and fans turned on him then.
Again I say this all hopefully, as there seems to be more evidence of smaller markets competing these days. It’s been so long since the Magic had some solid pieces it will be fascinating how it plays out once this team gets good again. I could very much see a scenario in which stars want to play in Orlando if we can luck into drafting super talented players others want to play with like in days past.

Re: Who do you want us to take at #1?
I like Paolo, but I'm not buying the Tatum comps. I really don't think he has the burst/quickness to be the jumbo wing many people seem to think he will be at the next level.
He's a clear 4/5, && I do have concerns about what kind of tangible impact he will have due to some of his shooting/defensive questions. His ftr is also not as high as you would expect it to be for his physical playing style. In fact, Jabari gets labeled as the one-dimensional chucker, but he had a higher FTR than both Chet and Paolo last year, which is something I value highly in players at the next level.
I really think Jabari is a much more comparable player to Tatum than Banchero is, though Tatum is not a perfect comp for him either. When you pit the stats up against each other, they are nearly identical (including FTR). Tatum was not a playmaker In college. It was a skill he developed 4-5 years into his professional career. Which gives me hope for Jabari.
Tatum had a clear edge in ball-handling/finishing at this stage, but there is a lot of back-to-the-basket/post catches that Tatum does to get into his offense (jab steps, step backs, drives to the basket) that I think Jabari should model his game after.

When are we gonna get some workout videos? Just want to see Jabari in an empty gym showing off his handles.
Seriously. The only recent workout video is of him shooting like ten 3s in a row lol. We know you can do that dude, show another dimension. Paolo at least has a video out with him knocking down a bunch of 3s.

Yea i think Paolo tries to play like him & on college level it works somehow (with mediocre eff.), but i just have a hard time to believe it works in the NBA. At least not as a high volume / high eff. offensive hub. He would be by far the heaviest (except older LeBron, who is a freak athlete), the slowest, least explosive of all the 3 level scoring wings. The guys who are not great athletes like Luka or Tatum are still more explosive than Paolo + have more advanced handles. Luka even uses his body much more to bully defenders than Paolo against college competition. Tatum got better wingspan for his position & finishes alot layups because of his length. Cade isnt really athletic too, but he projects to be a much better shooter.
I dont say it cant work, but so far we have no succesful prototypes & i didnt even include the defense yet.
In general the top 3 are really hard to compare to other players. They are all kinda unique playertypes.
A 6-10 guy who is maybe one of the best shooters day 1 he enters the NBA & who is really good at generating his own shot in a limited space (unlike Klay or Shard), but cant drive or finish at the hoop.
A skilled 2 way 7'' big who weighs less than 200 pounds.
A 6-10 / 250 pound guy, with kinda average athletic abilities, trying to play like a scoring wing.

He's got a point though. Kevin Durant played with two other 1st round talent starters on that Texas team and still lost in the tournament (DJ Augustine was the 9th pick, Damion Jones was the 24th pick, and Dexter Pittman was a second rounder as well). That's not a knock on KD and it shouldn't be a knock on Jabari either.

I would personally take Chet, but I certainly understand the appeal of Jabari and won't be surprised at all if that's who they take.

I think this is a critical point: many of us favour player-X, but most of us would be pleased with any of the three PFs being a Magician.
