I think it's obvious by now that I am in the group of guys you are talking about.

But I don't have any sort of top 3 expectations for the guy. I just have a good memory of all of the frustration I had watching a player game after game make the same obvious/boneheaded mistakes and costing his team chances at winning ball games. It's nothing close to All-star expectations. It's about not being a detriment to his team. And there is a huge amount of area in between those two outcomes.

I never hear anyone say "Dre should be leading his team to victories" or "Dre should be the dominant defender we know that he's capable of". Instead I hear them say "I really wish Dre would have ever learned to play within his limitations as a basketball player". I hear (and definitely say) "I really wish Dre would just listen and do the small teachable things that would make a big difference in how he contributes to a team".

Both Cleveland and L.A. were happy to see this guy go. Especially for the latter -- When Dre is getting paid $800K by the Lakers -- that it's pretty telling.

I strongly encourage folks with happy memories of Dre to go back and search the forum posts here when he was on the Pistons. It's amazing how clouded people's memories become as the years go by.

Fall back if no Ayton? :-D
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

It's a 17 page thread. By page 5 or 6 the tune has changed drastically as they realize their dream of SVG turning the Pistons into the Magic 2.0 is over.

Funny that you bring up a thread specifically meant to explore the possibility of moving him as proof he is well-loved :)

There were some good instances of "This is why you don't speak about the future in absolutes" in there.

I always saw Drummond as an overgrown kid, happy doing what comes easily but not much more.

It's ironic that the Pistons may end up with Ayton, a father who only gets two hours of sleep a night due to gaming.

It leaves me with some concern whether Ayton will develop further and make basketball a priority once he gets paid. Gamers gotta game.

If he continues to shoot 63% from the field, who cares?

Surprisingly, there were plenty of people back then with the foresight to be correct on Dre as a 3rd option at best and not a franchise player. So congrats to them

That would be fine with me too. Whether he does what's necessary over the next couple years to maintain or ideally improve that production is the question. We all got by on minimal sleep when we were that young, but there's a price down the road.

Always got too much hate? No, he always got too much love, too much rope & too many excuses. It felt like I was at war with damn near the whole board over Drummond. El Chivo and Invictus were definitely two of the guys who saw Dre the way I did. And yes, there are lots of cringey Drummond love threads & posts to look back on.

I'm sure we'll still disagree, but I said this poorly and used words that didn't match my intent. Let me clarify; what I mean is the degree of hate has seemed disproportionate to the crime. Like, I get the hate. I do. But then it goes too far. Some people act like he ate their babies.

And that is a general sentiment not directed at you, Invictus or anybody else in particular. Broad brush stroke amongst Piston fans.

I think people forget Pistons never had a healthy point guard from Iverson to Cade…

I respect that he tried to get with Jennette McCurdy through social media when it was much younger.

To me it was clear before we gave him that max deal, that he wasn't someone worthy of that contract. I had high hopes of Drummond early on, but even after he was a young all-star it was pretty obvious he wasn't playing winning basketball. He was still improving in some areas such as FTs, but him constantly posting up and calling for passes inside and being inefficient down low, while also ripping rebounds out of teammates hands it was pretty clear he was mostly out there playing for himself and his numbers.

Sometimes when you have guys on losing or average at best teams putting up good numbers, you have to take a hard look at what they are really contributing to winning basketball before giving them a big pay day.

We're in a similar situation to Grant right now, as to whether or not he's worth the $112 million contract he wants. We've seen him excel as a 3rd or 4th option on a good team where you have an all-time great playmaker (Jokic) but we are in a position where he might not make sense on a big money contract given our current make up. Or, with what we add this season as well as Cade, Bey, and Stewart taking steps forward he might fill a perfect role for us as we step a big step forward, with Grant taking less shots and focusing more on playing off the ball and being a great leader and defender. That's up for Weaver to decide what the best route to go is.

The implication being what, exactly?

I can't wait to hear this. Some things never change.

Holy crap I had to check that.

Wild to me that he was with us for nearly 8 seasons…

Implying that we never had a point guard healthy enough to win us games and we failed every draft pick outside of Drummond. We were never ever able to gain talent to surround Drummond with something of substance. He was definitely overpaid but nothing else we did helped that problem.
