Re: Bennedict Mathurin
Thinking he'd be a good fit for the Cavs in our draft range. We don't need a dude with star upside - just a decent role player to fit between our core guys on the wing.

I agree - his height is going to hold him back a bit. Not sure what his wingspan is but it looks long. I think he's realistically around the 6'4 height range.
Yeah the 6”7 is reaching (alluded to this on the draft thread). I use the umps as a nifty side guide as a lot played ball lol same with Cade if your not big in College you are going to look smaller in the NBA.
But he can play taller because of the wingspan offset. He’s a safe bet at the next level, can pop athletically when need be.
No, he's not anywhere close to 6'7. You can view him next to his teammate Dalen Terry who is probably that height. He's considerably shorter.
Yeah I know lol. But I reckon he can guard legit 6-5-6”6 SG guys provided they don’t out body him say a Butler for example whose naturally bigger.
Anyway NBA positions can get murky, it can become an advantage though if you can occupy more than one position on the court (skillset and size are key here).

Re: Bennedict Mathurin
Mathurin was really good again this afternoon. 30 pts / 7 rebounds and he played great defense the whole game. If he keeps this up - I think he's going to be a lotto pick. I do think his size his going to hurt his draft prospects but he plays bigger as DCasey said due to his length.

He’ll definitely be a lotto pick if he keeps this form up.

That whole Arizona team is a lot of fun to watch. But yeah, Mathurin in this draft is probably a lottery pick.

I’m catching some highlights of this year. Same conclusion as last year. This is a quality NBA player. Low risk pick, some team will be happy.

Re: Bennedict Mathurin
is he something more than a glorified Reggie Bullock? I'm reading he's an option at 5 for Pistons and I'm a little perplexed.

Wouldn’t take him in the lotto at all.

Tell me why. My opinion on Mathurin: will never be a lead guard/playmaker, is a liability on defense, both individually and team defense, motor runs a little cold, and basketball IQ is average at best. He’s just a good athlete with a good jumpshot. Will never be much more than a rotational 2 guard.

Feel the same way, he's basically an athletic motion shooter at this point. Hasn't earned the 'd' part of the 3+D wing I see a lot of people describe him as. He loses a lot of his athletic advantage when he's on-ball because the handle is genuinely that bad. He gets the most out of his athleticism on back doors, lobs, transition but he really isnt the type to create advantages at the rim off of his own dribble. Also no in-between game and the mid range jumper isn't there.
I think he needs to be an absolutely elite shooter to actually give you good value as a starter, and he's definitely a good shooter, but idk if he's elite. 78% ft shooter for his career, very bad midrange shooter over 2 season sample etc

Re: Bennedict Mathurin
Yep. The one thing he does well, he doesn’t do THAT well. 37% from the NCAA 3pt line as a 20 year old sophomore. The meh FT%. Is that really all that impressive?
Got a lot of wide open looks on a good Arizona team with the monster Koloko down low, and a really good backcourt partner in Terry.
I have no clue why a team in the 8-12 range wouldn't just take Ousmane Dieng

I think his ball handling and playmaking are weak. I think he looks like a stud playing with college boys. I think his game has a near zero chance to translate to stardom but he will be a solid rotation player, maybe a starter.

The lottery talent in that draft just isn't that great. Tell me, since you seem very down on him: who are all the players you have ahead of him? I'm genuinely curious.
I don't think he's anything special but he projects to be a useful player with his archetype and a fit on many teams. He'll have to improve to become a legit starter but that's true for virtually any prospect. The path for a solid-sized athletic SG who can shoot to find a good role in the NBA is quite open, even if he never fills some of the bigger holes that would noticeably enhance his upside.
On Dieng: I'd take him ahead of Mathurin but that's because I'd draft him higher than the 8-12 range. Once the first 6-7 players are off the board, I don't think any prospect really separates himself from Mathurin.

Re: Bennedict Mathurin
Agreed, after about 7, it gets murky. If Mathurin went 8 I wouldn't blink. If he went 16, I wouldn't blink either. Look at all the big boards around. All it takes is to be 2nd on a few big boards in a row and instead of going 9th, you are in the teens.

Ben McLemore is listed as 6'3" by the NBA. Why anyone believed in a 6'3" shooting guard with a poor feel for the game is amazing.

Re: Bennedict Mathurin
I want Mathurin at 6th, if Keegan Murray is off the board.
