Alondes Williams - Wake Forest

Post#1 » by MemphisX » Mon Dec 20, 2021 11:07 am

I think this guy has entered the conversation for the 2022 NBA draft. So we are going to have to talk about him. Going into ACC play, so will be good for this board to monitor and evaluate.

Huh surprised there hasn’t been much talk about Alondes. I have him around 20 right now. Shot needs to improve but it’s not broken. His game is reminiscent of Baron Davis, although obviously not to that level. Arguably the most gifted passer in the class. Tremendous vision and creativity. Also love his ability to penetrate. If his shot ever becomes even half decent he could be a problem for the league on both ends really.

I have wondered why he's so low, i've seen him mocked in the 50's. Is it issues concerning how his game scales down?

Pacers would have to consider him at 31.

I think it's because he's a 23 y/o combo-guard who can't shoot the 3ball. 28.2% from 3pt last year on a big sample size which is a shocking improvement from 16.7% from the year before.

His shooting seems inconsistent on all levels. It might be one of those things his team will decide to completely revamp in order to give him a clean slate.

I don't see the appeal in taking him in the 1st round. He hampers the floor spacing as your lead guard. He can't shoot the ball as your SG. He's strictly a bench player unless his shot ever comes around. I'd take Dalen Terry and Andrew Nembhard over him in the 20s. I don't have Williams in my top 40.

"Can't shoot" is way too strong. Given the variance in sample size the difference between him and Nembhard last season isn't the huge chasm you think it is. Nembhard shot well last year but the prior 3 years was averaging 32%-ish. The difference between them is that Alondes is an elite level passer and also can create his own shot at the rim. He doesn't need the 3pt shot to improve that much to the point where combined with his burst and explosion at the rim he becomes an extreme threat as a 3-level scorer. Also think he projects as a better defender than Nembhard. I just don't think passing on Nembhard will ever make me look bad, but if you pass on Alondes and he hits...don't say nobody warned you!

Came in here to say "this may sound strange, but he reminds me of the late years version of B-Diddy", but you already said it. 8-)

He's also part of why I'm a tad skeptical of Laravia. Don't get me wrong, if he's there for the Warriors pick and Terry/Moussa/Jalen and some others are gone, I'd be fine with Laravia... but he gets a few wide open dunks a game from Alondes. Now, thats a skill knowing when to cut and that can carry over to the NBA, but I do think his efficiency numbers look a bit worse if he's not on Wake Forest.

1) he's 22, not 23
2) didn't get heavy mins at the D-1 level till this season, so he's still just scratching the surface of his potential - not your typical 22 yr old. Most 22 yr olds have just completed their 4th season playing heavy mins of D-I ball (so they're further along in their development and closer to their ceiling), not 1 which is the case for Alondes
3) shot 40% from 3 at JUCO: https://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2018-19/div1/players/alondeswilliamsu3ho
4) the insane jump in production from last season to this season (from sitting on the bench at Okalahoma to ACC POY, leading the conference in scoring and assists) tells me he's on a pretty rapid development trajectory. The only guys who improved as much from last season to this one are Johnny davis, eason and keegan murray - all potential lotto picks..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

For all intents and purposes he is 23, he turns 23 in 15 days.
