On the latest episode of his podcast, "The Lowe Post," ESPN's Zach Lowe revealed Boston's mindset after adding White from the San Antonio Spurs at the deadline.

"The Celtics were 32-25 when they made that trade," Lowe began. "Their surge was beginning, but it was not super obvious that they were a juggernaut in the making. They had looked really good, but their schedule had been pretty easy. You couldn't, from the outside, just automatically conclude that this was a juggernaut waiting to happen."

"Internally, the Celtics thought, 'We've figured something out, and we think we're really, really good. And we view this Derrick White trade not like you view it in this sort of cold, calculating way. ... We view it as, we might be able to win the championship. This might be our once piece away, and if we have to overpay a little bit, we don't care, because we think we're that good.'"

"Whether they win or lose this series, the grade on the Derrick White trade is 'A,'" Lowe added. "They had a better sense of their team than I did, and they were right."

Fanbases love draft picks. Boston gave up a pick in the upper 20s for him.

And, don't talk to me about pick swaps. There isn't going to be a swap. Celtics are gonna be in the 20s on that swap. San Antonio will be in the teens.

Is a championship really worth a mid first round pick and an opportunity to tank six years from now? Some might say no.

If we win, then the cost is a no brainer. Even if miss out on 2nd overall in 2028, you pay the price and live with it. If you miss out on a title and you have traded away 2nd overall (worst case scenario) then that is a **** nightmare

A legit shot at a title even is prob worth it, frankly.

I mean, giving up #2 overall would be *** but tons of teams get a top 3 pick and never sniff a title shot.

I don't think we'd be here without him. His play on both ends contributed greatly to wins this postseason. He has been a key piece. Imagine not having him when Smart couldn't play? Ooh wee. Imagine it being Schro instead of him versus Mia? Imagine JRich. Both are good players but the defense and running an offense (knowing when to go and then when to get outta the way), that's what White always does, we didn't have to pull him out of his comfort zone like we would have had to ask Schro and Josh. White has been excellent, even when he couldn't shoot.

if someone making contested jumpers off you is being "hunted" as people were saying about Pritchard, then White got hunted big time. They posted him up too. He's not a great defender. He can hold his own though but it is kinda laughable that the narrative is that he's some plus defender when he's far from it.

Had a good little stretch there andd it's goooone.

Dude has to be better. Period. Game got away today because he missed TWO WIDE OPEN 3's. Missed another wide open one in the 1st. If you cant hit 2 out of 3 wide open shots you don't deserve to be in the finals.

Say or believe what you want, but I believe it' awfully hard to get 3 or 4 shots, limited touches and be successful. He needs to be far more involved to make an impact.

Is that more on him, the coach, or teammates, you can decide, But our ball movement has sucked and he creates ball movement.. Get him going early.. It's not like our offense can't use more ball movement.
2 things need to go.. my lack of spell check and Joe..

just atrocious. He's had his moments for sure and maybe we wouldn't be here if not for a couple of his fluke shooting nights in these playoffs and that made me even question my hatred for the trade but he was arguably THE reason why we lost tonight and maybe lose this series as a result. He's a bad shooter but he can get streaky and give the appearance of being better than he is. He was putrid on defense tonight and is average at best on that end overall. Barring a championship being delivered with him being a major contributor that trade will be a tough pill to swallow for years to come.

White looks great when the ball is moving and we're playing with pace. He looks pathetic when we're not. He needs to be more assertive. He's a guy they need to take charge in those stagnant times. That's why they brought him here. IDK if it's a confidence issue, coaching, or the other guys on the team all trying to play hero ball, but it needs to change. He plays good team offensive basketball himself but when the rest of the guys aren't he wilts rather than taking command.

We'll see what happens these next two games but it doesn't look good. This team needs to spend a entire training camp and regular season hammering home good offensive basketball. They need their default in pressure situations to become good team basketball with ball and player movement. And White's role in that needs to be that he stops shrinking into his shoes and just waiting for the next game when we do slip out of that.

This bolded part - you could say the same thing about every guy on our team.

There's no such thing as contested jumpers off Pritchard. There are only open shots with Pritchard near you and open shots with Pritchard not near you.

White really needs to snap out of this funk. Might as well trade for Ben Simmons if White's not going to shoot any better.

White is a very good defender against most guards, against someone like Andrew Wiggins going downhill with a step on him or Wiggins posting up, not nearly as good.

So JRich and that first rounder would have taken us over the edge?

lol he's shooting 43.5% from 3 in the nba finals.

Not bad at all for a guy who's never even played in a series beyond the 1st round prior to this season, is still adjusting to being on a new team and is coming on cold off the bench, not getting a ton of mins and sometimes only getting like 4 or 5 mins at a time before getting yanked out which means he's not out there long enough to get in rhythm.

oh yeah, and you might want calm down with all those angry capital letters, lol. You might not realize this, but sometime the wide open shots are actually harder to make than the contested ones.

Anymore excuses you want to reach for?

Dude has sucked. Period. Watch the games. He shot 55% in game 1 and then 30%, 33%, 33% and wait for it.. 0.00% in game 5.

+25 in game 1. Minus 17,12, 19 and 13 the last four games.

Horrendous. He isn't playing minutes because he's not doing a **** thing out there.

I like D. White.. He's a baller. Game 1 is more true to who he is than games 2 to 5. But he needs to put the big boy pants on just like Horford. Time to be nasty, time to contribute, make plays. He's played nearly 50 games here now. Ime is dying to get somebody to play 40 off the bench and the guy can't step up and out play Gary **** Payton for 5 minutes..

PS: 11/9 assist to TO. Awful.

You still wanna do this?

1-6, 16%, 0% from 3, 2 asts, 1 TO and a - 26.. I REPEAT IN ANGRY CAPITAL LETTERS.. MINUS TWENTY SIX. In a home, elimination game 6.

T-R-A-S-H.

Easy, easy option to trade for a bench upgrade.
