Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread Part 3
Real GM is implying that everyone but Trae and Hunter could be traded. Which I hope we are not doing and I expect that this means only that everyone is available but they will be trading just 2-3-4 of them.
I cannot see us shaking up the roster or at least I have the hope that we are not doing so. Chemistry is important and making a big burst with the team is pointless.
For example, Gobert and Capela are similar about rebounding, finishing, passing... only Gobert is longer (much longer) and can block or avoid some shots. But Gobert is not giving us any shooting, any passing, any three point shooting, any post presence offensively.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread Part 3
Media were saying one week ago that IND wanted to keep Turner, and now... they want to move him and Brogdon.
And what is the rumor... CHA would be interested, and want to move their 15th pick
I seriously hope we are talking to IND too, and I would prefer to send us this 16pick and get Turner than sending a lot more value to get someone like Ayton, or using this 16th pick to move up in this draft.
Sending one of Gallo, Capela or Huerter and this 16pick would be perfect
The two teams in the Finals both can play with a full lineup shooting 3s, we need it too, and the possibility to switch between Okongwu and Turner at C is perfect, we can also play both.
And if we keep Collins, he would be more playing with Trae when we use Turner/Collins as C/PF because Turner would create more space inside which would allow John to cut to the basket easily.
I'm pretty sure we clearly need more something like that than spending 35M on a C like Ayton, which would not match the fact that they want Okongwu to play more... Unless you play Okongwu at PF but it makes two guys at C/PF that are not natural 3pts shooters.
Having Turner would also open trading for Simmons as it would allow to play with 4 3pts shooters and Simmons, which maximise his usage.

Turner is a versatile center still close enough in age to Pacers floor general Tyrese Haliburton, the prized return for Sabonis from the Sacramento King. But Indiana has openly projected a willingness to further steer into a rebuild this offseason, sources said, with an eye toward acquiring young talent to play alongside the 22-year-old Halliburton.
As Marc Stein noted Monday, Turner's impending free agency in 2023 seems to be clear grounds for the Pacers to re-engage his trade market this offseason, if there's little momentum for a contract extension with Indiana. The Charlotte Hornets have long been considered a potential landing spot for Turner, and the Hornets have communicated around the league a willingness to move the No. 15 pick, sources said...

Turner is an expiring contract, he currently has no interest in signing an extension and wants to become a FA. We should not be giving up the 16th pick for an expiring that can just walk away.

Cap + Gallo + FRP, which I know they probably wouldn't take. In a vacuum it would be higher, but given the availability of Ayton (or potentially Turner) I would prefer to stay younger and find a big more complimentary to Okongwu, as well as retain enough assets to upgrade the wing in the future.
But I am firmly in the camp that Capela's limitations are holding this team back and while Gobert's limitations are similar, the things he does well he does much better that Clint. We would be a better team for it (but unlikely a contender unless Hunter can develop into an All-Star level player).

100% agree with this answer.
I keep seeing Collins, Cap, 16...and I'm going to lose it lol... That's a coup for Utah....I would not be happy

Yeah the Collins+Capela trade board offers are frustrating. Ignoring our biggest issue (guard defense) while creating a whole at the 4.

I'm not opposed to moving both Collins and Cap... Just not for Gobert....I would be ok with Cap, #16, future 1st, Gallo for Gobert then trade Collins for #7 and get best player available.
We open up some salary space and JJ and OO will play at 4. Hopefully we get another wing at 7 and still have Hunter.
But if we lose Cap, JC and #16 for Gobert I'm going to need a some time away on a beach somewhere to process that thing

Both the GB and the Trade forum seem to have anted up the obnoxiousness lately. RealGM is not unique anymore, but some of the heavy users still act like it.

Then try to trade for him without the 16th pick, but at least try. If it works great, Turner could make a long playoffs run next season with ATL and re-sign here.

Right, if a trade of Collins+Capela doesn't help to fix the guard defense, don't do it. It will only be possible to fill the roster with another great player once the TV deal creates a big increase of Cap
Better building trades on something like:
Capela for Turner, or Gallo+one/two second round picks is they prefer
Keep Collins for something like Collins+Huerter for Simmons

We'll know very soon with Turner, he can be extended before June 30. Any team giving picks will want that window to extend him with a trade. It seems he won't be in Indiana unless they reach a deal.

If Utah can get a better offer than
Capela
Huerter
#16
CHA pick
Then they should take it. Gobert is a star to me, so I'd understand the Jazz getting better offers
But I continue to be confused by reports of the Hawks including Collins in that trade. The Jazz themselves have shown the upper limit of a "Gobert plus star guard" team. There would be almost no other assets left to improve the Hawks.

You Hawks fans (as me) do not question why Utah want to part ways with Gobert.
I will tell you: he cannot shoot, post up, pass, run or dribble like many big guys can already these days.
He cannot offer "modern basketball" capabilities to the team.
Teams look for bigs who can shoot from three or at least command a double defense when posting up.
Gobert cannot offer any of those.

Code: Select all
Gobert is one of the best players in the league and would make the Hawks better at the things they need to improve upon.
The thinking here if the Hawks and Jazz agreed to a deal would be that Gobert has been one of the three best defensive players in the league for several years running, and you’re almost guaranteed to have, at minimum, an average defense with how generational he is in protecting the rim. Plus, Gobert is an excellent finisher around the rim, and he hasn’t played with the caliber of passer that Young is. I think the two of them together cover for each other’s faults and would make the other a better player.
Gobert is certainly one of the best 25 players in the league. As far as Gobert goes, his contract is the most concerning part of this. It’s hard to build a roster when you have two contracts as big as Gobert’s and Young’s are. Gobert is a clear upgrade over Capela, but he’s double the cost. He already indicated he's not interested in signing an extension. He wants to hit FAcy.

Ohhh, I thought about it more than you think since before John and Clint extension as I was pretty sure that Schlenk would keep both until he can test if it's possible to get Gobert.
Now, it was before Gobert extension and the fact that we have to send so much salary to match makes me reluctant to do this trade.
I think we are better with Capela (or another C at this salary like Turner) and 20M on another thing, than with Gobert alone.
Now, I don't believe at all these supposed limitations of Gobert and that it would be the reason of them trading him.
I'm pretty sure they are doing a marketing choice, they want to have a flashy team. And it's easier to replace the slowest guy in the roster than replace several of the other guys.
I've watched UTA games, and the numbers and matching what I saw: UTA are good when Gobert is on the floor, and are almost always worst when he's on the bench
The last playoffs, it was like that, they have dominated when he was on the floor, and they were a bad team without him.
Watching so many times this thing, and seeing that numbers like Net rating go this way too, I have no doubt that he has limitations, but that they are not at all limitations that makes a team unable to win a championship with him, because he still have a huge impact.
UTA didn't get a ring not because of Gobert, but mainly because the other one, especially Mitchell, Clarkson (even if he was playing better in this last playoffs, but when they are good with Clarkson, it's often when he's on fire on offense, not because he defend more), Bogdanovic... are just playing like "we don't need to defend, this work is for Gobert"
The only other one that was defending, when healthy, was Conley.
The next TV deal may turn the 40M contract of Gobert into something like 30M now, so I think it's not a long term problem, but it's a short term one.
We can't send so much thing to match because we won't be able to sign other players, we can only improve now by trading.
If only we had a management like MIA, it would be different because we could turn unknown or young players quickly into good players, but it's not case.
Gobert would make ATL better if it's only for Capela+Gallo+picks, but it will only be improving a position where they are already good, instead of improving the worst positions of the team.
If they get Turner for Capela, they already get one more 3pts shooter, which would make it easier for all the other shooters.
And he defend. He can also play PF with Okongwu at C, and the team would be able to play faster than with Capela
And if they want to improve the defense, they can trade for Simmons since the only one not shooting 3s would be Okongwu, and not Okongwu+Capela
Yes, it's not as much flashy as getting bigger names like Gobert, but the roster would be more balanced, would run faster and create more problem to opponent wing scorers

Bear in mind that the bench player behind Gobert is Whiteside.
While he lacks desire, he is tall, a shot blocker, rebounder... but he is playing with all the bench players.
Utah Jazz bench players are clearly behind the S5, as in many teams.
But they just have Carkson and little more.

1. What would Indiana want for Turner? Probably 1-2 FRP... But what players actually interest them?
2. If Turner is intent on testing FA (by not getting traded and agreeing to a deal before June 30), there's a lot of risk for giving up 2FRP

If they're loaded at guard and are trading away a young big man, they'd probably want Okongwu and Jalen Johnson...as a starting point.
