Maybe I'm crazy, but trading Dort to move up makes sense to me. They're paying the guy like $1.50. Of course he's going to want the brinks truck when the time comes. Move him to a situation where he can get that and use it as a chance to replenish. Not a hard decision if its for the right draft prospect, to my mind.

It really depends on the cost. What does Lu want in his next deal? What are you getting for him?
We have soooo many pick why trade a guy you know can be in your playoff rotation and you know fits w/ this team. Giddey and Shai are not great defenders. Lu makes up for them. You can put Lu on Luka for the entire game.
The Thunder are going to have to pay someone. If you can pay Lu more now then when Giddey and this years pick are about to get paid Lu will be coming off the books at a ripe age of 27.

Yup, and he doesn’t fit with giddey. You don’t blow up your payroll for dudes who don’t fit if you can trade them for someone on a rookie deal who does. And he would more positively contribute to winning next year in what I think will be the last possible year to be a lotto team. He’s a great dude. Very good defender. Hard worker. First class meme material. But he’s also a funky size with a weird skill set.

I feel like he kind of does fit with Giddey. He is a guy in a playoff rotation. Half the league only has 6-7 guys who can play in the playoffs and he is pretty good defender who is getting better at the corner 3. Why trade Lu plus a pick just to move up a couple of slots? I just don't buy it, unless Dort wants $20 million a year.

“Who is getting better at” is code for “a bad fit but we are hoping he becomes less of a bad fit.” Giddey needs shooters.

Can we stipulate that if this actually happens it is likely because Dort's price was at a level Presti felt we shouldn't/couldn't go to? I think Dort is real good and I love having him, but he's also sort of got qualities of guys who have ended up bad contracts in the past. Elite defender who still gets cooked by elite players on the regular. Some injury history. Plays a style that leads one to believe it may get only worse (think of all those charges he takes and the beating).
Like I say, I'd still like him here, but if he becomes a bad contract down the road we'll look back and see a lot of the warning signs right in front of us.

I don't think that would be the only reason. Dort is a good player but far from elite and you badly need to try to draft future stars...Presti might want to try to take the gamble with Sharpe or another prospect. I also don't love Dort long term if we plan to build around Shai and Giddey. Salary issues would only come after upside and fit in a potential Dort trade IMO.
This is basically the last time we could sell high on Dort so the timing is pretty good...I don't know if I would pull the trigger, I have mix feelings about it (in a 12 for 7 with Dort including).
I would definitely trade Dort and a bag of picks for Ivey at 4 though. I think it's the perfect draft to do it even if moving up from 12 to 4 is a long shot. We all know how difficult it is move up in a draft (need the right team and opportunity) and it should be even more difficult to move up in the strong 2023 draft.

Re: 2022 NBA Draft Thread
I'm sold on both Chet and Jabari so won't be upset draft night if we pick either.
Chet: Game changing defence - potential DPOY candidate. I don't have many concerns about his weight like most people but the biggest area of improvement for me is how he moves his feet on the perimeter. He has quick feet for his size but doesn't get low on the perimeter due to how high his hips are. He is fine against most guys since he uses his length to make up for this but guys with elite handles and jumpshooting will cook him if he doesn't improve.
On offense he can do a bit of everything - has a great feel for the game and can contribute if he is on or off the ball. You could argue he lacks the elite shot creation you want from a superstar but I think his game will be better suited as a 2nd/3rd option as he is very unselfish and prefers to make the team better than get his own.
Ceiling: Gobert who can shoot and has all round offensive skills
Jabari: Elite shooter and will likely be the best shooting big man in the league - will pair extremely well with SGA and Giddey who need space to operate. People say his handling, finishing and passing aren't great but I think they are solid enough and will improve.
Defensively he has amazing footwork and would work well within a defensive scheme that switches a lot. Lacks the elite defensive instincts that Chet has though and can be caught out not rotating and filling space correctly but that can be fixed to a degree.
Ceiling: Rashard Lewis with better defense
In an ideal world I would have actually loved to draft both these guys as I think they fill both gaps we have on the roster.

By the way, if there's any chance he's Gobert with better offense, he could easily be one of the best players in the league. Even just Gobert who could shoot well on spot ups would be amazing.

If I had to bet money, Id say it's either Chet or Ivey.

Same but things are SO quiet about Banchero that I'm a bit scared.
I think it's a pipe dream to be able to move from 12 to 4 with teams at 5 or 6 willing to get Ivey at 4...hope we can find a move up to 7 or 8 to take Sharpe (or Mathurin if he falls but that's unlikely)

what's the point of the picture? They are all having work outs with team from picks 1-5 (well except Jabari that only worked out for the thunder and magic)

At this point I don't think we will know who the Magic is going to draft before draft day (and even less who OKC wants at 2)

Is that your account? Whoever it is, dude is real nuts for Chet. Even has a post about Chet signing his name with a star and mentions it being a sign he's perfect for the Magic instead of a sign that Chet is a 14 year old girl mentally.

I can vouch that basketballRob is 100% team Smith.

That would be a dream scenario. Hell send em 5 FRP. Holmgren and Ivey would be a dream come true.Dadouv47 wrote:Balkman32 wrote:What if the deal was #12 and Dort for #4?
How much would you be willing to pay Dort a year?
Dort can't get you to 4...maybe 12 + Dort + 2 or 3 FRPs.
4 years/72 millions is the max I would give to Dort (and I don't like it). Think 4 years/64 is fair for both sides.
Return to Oklahoma City Thunder
