The Utah jazz are clearly suffering an identity crisis right now. A franchise in turmoil, whose Head Coach chose to walk away from them despite them begging him to stay, and his two best players don’t like each other with reports floating around that one or both of them is going to demand a trade. This almost feels like a purposeful distraction from the instability in their front office and in their locker room. What a mess.

Cavaliers come to mind. Before and after Lebron got drafted was a drastic change

Also, to give a little background on the Jazz rebrand. They went with a branding agency called STUDIO DUMBAR/DEPT, which isn't very common with a lot of teams. They created an entire identity system that go along with these new jerseys. Dropping some of it below.

I cant believe this is what a branding agency came up with. Its so bland. Why are logos and jerseys becoming so boring and bland?
Remember the 90's when logos and jerseys were fun and creative?

Suns are the only ones who made it look really good.

The Valley uni & court combo was probably the best I’ve seen in years.

They hired a branding agency to do THAT?

I’m a designer myself & those black uniforms are terrible — what was the point?

They just took UTAH & JAZZ, then slapped them over a black uniform & a neon yellow uniform with nothing else on them. Then they tacked on a basic, uninspired white uniform.

The worst part is that agencies are typically paid between $20-50K to do redesigns like this.

No creativity whatsoever in these unis. So bland and lifeless. The black jazz jerseys look like jv practice uniforms.

Why do teams keep using highlighter yellow, I've never seen a single good uniform with that shade.

Yup, someone got paid a lot of money to actually make these. Isn't America the greatest country in the world?

This reminds me of a story my dad loves telling. He was friends with an Oakland city councilman in the 70s. They went to lunch, and walking back from it his friend wanted to show him an art project from a genius artist. So they go to this project that was installed outside of some building. My dad said it was just a bunch of rebar that was kind of welded together in a non-descript shape. And his friend is going on and on about what a genius this guy was. Finally my dad says "Honestly, I don't see what's so special about it. It's just a bunch of rebar that got welded together." And my dad's friend says "yes, and we paid him $20k for this. Isn't he a genius?"

Honestly, at this point, if you're going to do this crap, why not sell the name back to New Orleans, and rebrand yourselves as the Stars. It's a good name with ABA history.

could be worse. pro jerseys are the worst

the designs are all uninspiring font styles "because we're a professional org so we should be conservative"

they should change the name to fit the area like "utah polygamists" or "the big sky" or something

Whoa whoa whoa...where did you come up with this original material? Did you think of it all by yourself? I hope so, because this joke is about as original and fresh as it gets. I've never heard it before today! It's just that amazingly original!

yup, thought it up all by myself. took only a second or two. "multi-love" was too obtuse

don't you like "the big sky" though??? hmmmm?

i don't really get what they're doing with the black n yellow, I guess it hasn't been utilized much in basketball but seems toned down and bland in the extreme. Nothing about it says Utah or Jazz to me.

Nothing screams "Jazz" better than a purple mountain.

Nothing screams "Jazz" like the state of Utah.

They moved from New Orleans over forty years ago. They need to change their name to the Utah Temperance. Their jersey design can be a man and his 4 wives shrugging with a slew of empty alcohol bottles at their feet.

The black jersey looks very good. I'd assume that the majority of people would want a black jersey option.

It's like shining up a turk when you can't even figure out the team that has two players with all-star potential. One is a future hall of fame and the other will note than likely be too.

But, yes, another season of new players are a necessity.

Nike has done an absolutely horrific job since taking over jerseys 5 years ago.

Almost all of the new designs are uninspired plain trash, having road teams wear their home whites and vice versa, the stupid "V" cut of the jersey backs, etc. It's bled into the branding with odd and unnecessarily generic fonts and roundel style logos. Nike just sucks at the whole thing.

Wish adidas or Champion could do NBA jerseys again.
