It's incredibly impressive to accomplish at such a young age. Well done, Mr. Fields

Hawks promote Landry Fields to general manager

The Atlanta Hawks are promoting assistant general manager Landry Fields to general manager beginning July 1, a source confirmed to The Athletic.

Fields, 33, will continue to work under president of basketball operations Travis Schlenk in the Hawks' front office. Schlenk and his staff have built a playoff contender in Atlanta, and the Hawks’ management decided to reward Fields for his efforts.

Why was Fields promoted to general manager?
Chris Kirschner, Hawks beat writer: Fields was a popular target for teams across the league to fill their own general manager roles, so this title change helps keep the 33-year-old in Atlanta.

Travis Schlenk and Fields have already worked side-by-side in building the roster when Fields was an assistant GM for the Hawks, so nothing will change on that front. Fields was originally hired by the Hawks because of his relatability with players and his scouting eye when he was inside the San Antonio Spurs organization.

Happy to keep him I guess, but we all know that Schlenk is still calling the shots

Another Warrior's acquisition.

Looking forward to what insights he can bring.

NOTE: That KD sign and trade for D'Angelo Russell which turned into Andrew Wiggins was a couple of strokes of genius that has played out wonderfully this postseason.

Some guys just aren't Batman. More Robin that can just fit in and play without pressure. He's in his 8th season.
He said this - playing in Minny and putting up point on a losing teams, people don't care.....playing on a winning teams matters with perception (paraphrasing)

But one thing I see is that because he was the one to leave MIN, it's like he was the problem, while strangely, most team numbers have always shown that MIN was playing good with Wiggins on the floor when he was there.
I understand some expected more from a #1 pick, but he was always better than what the average opinion on him was saying

I don't think we're all quite on the same page.

I'm not referring to Andrew Wiggins the player, I'm referring to the Andrew Wiggins the asset.

GSW front office didn't let Kevin Durant walk away for nothing when he left town. They convinced BRK to do a sign and trade for D'Angelo Russell to retain some level of value for the player -- even knowing the initial move wasn't a perfect fit. Then made a secondary move for a better fitting asset a year later that was only available because of the D Russell acquisition.

Code: Select all

A sign-and-trade for Durant returned D’Angelo Russell, who was flipped for Andrew Wiggins and the draft pick that became Jonathan Kuminga.

That is a level of foresight you don't see from most front offices, fans, players, analysts.

The fact GSW made a couple of underrated moves that led to yet another title, and now we're getting more of that braintrust in our front office is really encouraging.

We just need a coach who is more in-line with the vision and style of play our PBO/GM have in mind.

Presser:

“It seems natural with where we wanted to go this season and how it ended up,” Fields said of all the Hawks rumors. “There are quotes in the media of us wanting to get better, so there’s been times where teams and media have definitely locked into that and the chatter starts. For me, it doesn’t seem different than the past couple of years. We’re doing our job in calling teams and seeing what’s out there. Teams are doing their job and calling us. Perhaps there’s just more out there this year.” where this team is on that end.

“The identity defensively, that’s something we’re going to have to build into,” Fields said. “That’s been part of the reason why we haven’t taken that step. We have to have an everyday hard-hat approach to our defensive capabilities. For us, it’s how do we get tougher? How do we continue to make the right rotations? How do we take pride in point-of-attack defense? All of those things are considered into that. The identity piece is going to come when we see it consistently.

“Part of the process of where we’re at as a group, we still have a young group. Playing defense in this league is hard. Everyone watches the teams that advance in the playoffs, that is a mindset and a continuous progression they have to go through. I chalk that up to guys continuing to learn.”

Fields did say the Hawks are looking at outside talent to upgrade the defense but, of course, that will depend on who is and isn’t available through trades, free agency and the draft. He also said for the Hawks to improve next season, “defense is where it’s going to start.” It would be stunning if the Hawks don’t add several good defenders to fill out their roster in the coming weeks. Fields also echoed what Ressler said during his news conference last month: that getting a secondary ballhandler who fits with Young is also important to take some of the load off Young’s offensive responsibilities.

“We still have a ways to go. We have a young group,” Fields said. “We still have areas, especially defensively, we have to continue growing. To put an exact time frame on it is difficult because you’re working with nuance and complexity with humanity. At the same time, our guys are hungry, and they’ve been working hard. For us in the front office and collaborating with our coaches, I think we’ve done an extremely good job this offseason, and it hopefully sets us up for the future.”

Is Fields going to be making all the transactions w/o any restrictions this offseason or next.

Fields will soon be the Hawks general manager, third in command on the basketball operations side of Atlanta’s organization.

Not much will change for Fields, who’s been assistant general manager for the Hawks the past two seasons. He will still report to Travis Schlenk, the president of basketball operations, and they both will operate under Tony Ressler’s direction as owner.

Yeah, it sounds like Schlenk will still be deciding the larger, overarching direction of the franchise.

But Fields is responsible for the details, negotiations, speaking with GMs across the league.

Thanks for clarifying two of yall. Makes sense for Schlenk to see this through to the end as this is his creation.

Anyone else underwhelmed by Landry's first few days as the man?

LF is officially the man in Atlanta.

What do we expect from the 34 year old wunderkind?

I’m thinking he looks to make a big splash over the next & months. Word is there were squabbles between his guys and Schlenk’s guys the last few months.

I expect he’ll get new scouts, new front office advisors, a new coach and a new philosophy….no more Warriors East for us.

Yes, the Warriors East failed, and I'm not even certain that our young Hawks will be anything more than role players.

I look forward to seeing what Fields can do for us because we know change has been needed.

Failed?

Or just didn't work yet? Sadly, we'll never get to see Travis's vision to completion.

I do believe the right coach takes us to contender status with a core of John, Clint, Huerter and Trae.

But we switched gears only a few years into it all.

Follow up:
.......director of scouting Stephen Giles also has been moved aside, and Grant Liffman — a scout hired last summer and Fields' college roommate — has been promoted, though the exact details of his new role were not known.

And suddenly, it all makes sense. This about the young guys pushing out the old guard.

The PBO is gone. The dir of pro scouting is gone. The HC is talking of retiring.

The young braintrust of Landry Fields, Nick Ressler and Trae Young are engaged in a (not-so-hostile) takeover of the front office.

I'm disappointed Tony Ressler, Steve Koonin and Grant Hill let this happen.

This had better work. Front office instability coupled with coaching and locker room issue is a recipe for disaster. Strong front offices can overcome lockerroom issues - having both leaves me very uneasy.
