Pardon my ignorance. But if we waved Plumlee and his 9million then we could have signed both draft picks and maxed Miles without getting Jordan into his dreaded luxury tax correct? If that is the case we definitely are 110% making a move in the next 30 hours

That's right. If Kupchak determined no path to cutting costs via trade to duck below the tax he would've cut Plumlee, Oubre and Martin. They represent 11 million dollars and you pay that for pick 15 every single time. Pick 15 is worth far more than 11 million. We do not have a tax problem. We have biased outsiders who have no grasp on the tradeoff between Plumlee, Oubre, Martin and pick 15.

We can keep everyone with Hayward excluding Martin and Oubre's 5 million guarantee.

Any way we can just completely dump Hayward for 15? then we give Miles his 30 million and we have about 13 million in cap space to use. Which is enough to sign a guy like Mitchell Robinson or Nic Claxton, and we will be able to offer more than MLE.

Maybe okc wants more picks and can absorb his contract. Zach Lowe said earlier that Robinson is leaving towards resigning with the Knicks. If that's the case I'd definitely see us keeping one of then to draft one of the centers.

I don't know though this all confusing as hell. Mitch will earn his 7 figure salary

Only thing I can see make sense is Ayton has reached out and wants to sign here, and if that's the case, Charlotte is dumping Hayward for as little money back as possible and using the Oubre and Plumlee contracts along with a Kai or Bouk or Martin to swap for Ayton

Yeah, Mitch is not a wheeler and dealer, he's the methodical type.

If it were the trade deadline I'd have no hope, Mitch historically (going back to LA) doesn't make mid-season trades unless it's game changing. Luckily he's a bit more proactive during the draft (acquiring the Kai pick, flipping SGA for Miles + 2nd), but only slightly.

i'd hardly count pick for pick draft trades as major moves. you and me could trade the 11th pick for the 12th pick and a 2nd rounder. There really isn't an excuse for a team not doing some wheeling and dealing when the team you're running has been 10th, 9th, 9th, 10th, and 10th in its conference under your watch.

I wouldn't consider them major moves either, just an indicator that draft day trades are at least possible.

I'm not against a big move on principle or anything, but I wouldn't force it either. Team is still super young, other than Gordo, we need to develop our guys and be willing to pay them when they pop (I will be very down on Mitch and the organization as a whole if they let Miles go for peanuts). I suspect any win-now trades we'd make would just be shortcuts that didn't work, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong on that front.

With reports you guys are looking at lowering your cap number for the Bridges extension, any chance you might look to offload James Bouknight?

With reports that we might be shopping Rozier as well I'd think we would keep him. It's a whirlwind around here these days so who really knows.

I’m taking dumping Hayward and a pick for nothing

I said a month ago I'd trade him for a 2023 1st round pick.

I think we need to be looking to move PJ this offseason

I mean I like PJ but he's gonna get himself a real nice paycheck next offseason and he's got good trade value right now and we've got players that can fill in for him - Miles (assuming he resigns), McDaniels, Kai, and maybe even someone like Sochan/Eason. I would be trying to pick up a future first to make up for the one we gave up for Kai Jones

Yeah. I'm not a fan going into next year without a pick.

I think PJ still has a lot to prove, but I would wait and see and potentially look to move him at deadline if we think he is going to be too expensive or just in general not a key piece moving forward. I have not seen nearly enough from Kai or McDaniels to offload PJ and leave a huge hole at PF this year. He is still cheap for now, no reason to rush it.

I do think drafting Sochan/Eason is a good hedge in the meantime. Hard to really know right now with so much up in the air though.

If Kupchak wanted to free cap he'd cut Plumlee, Oubre, Martin, McDaniels, Richards.

Please, kindly, fans of other teams, do the math on the cost savings above.

Hornets never needed to move rookie scale contracts to duck the tax, whether picks or Bouknight or Kai or PJ etc.

We actually need those contracts to control costs, just like every other small market franchise. At this point, I'm surprised this is so complicated for people.

I value Sochan and Eason's basketball skills over PJ, and I think we should keep PJ (and was high on him during his draft). I honestly don't know why Eason isn't going top 10. He didn't even start at LSU and put up great numbers with a Kawhi Leonard body and has a relentless motor on both sides of the ball. He doesn't have the ball handling, but I'd take him anyway and figure it out.

With the caveat that nobody actually knows wtf we're doing, what appears to be the most relevant data point here is that after Borrego was fired, Mitch had a presser in which he said he wished Bouknight and Kai Jones had played more and that it was a coach's decision not to. Seems pretty unlikely after that comment that he trades his assets before he says how they perform on the floor.

Good insight. I definitely considered that it might be the case.

I feel like we did this with Miles as well.

Miles first three years...211 games played, 108 starts, 27. mpg, 11.1 ppg, 5.2 rbp, 1.7 apg on 46/35/81 %

PJ first three years...... 187 games played, 146 starts, 29.3 mpg. 11.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.3 apg on 45/37.5/70 %

Not saying PJ makes a Miles leap, but PJ started playing his best ball to end his third year. Just like Miles did.

The thing with PJ is I find it really hard to believe we will pay him 20+ million a year on this next contract, which I think a few teams will get when they strike out next year

But I do believe in him still.
