Hardy was the big fall, but he's ball dominant and we've now got even more of that-and it was already a problem.

hardy went from projected top 5 pick to 37th pick.

I wonder if he was picked as a 2-way contract player? Seemed to be a bit of a reach.

Massive reach and he’s 4 years away from being 4 years away. Woooo!!!

Caleb Houstan | 6-foot-8, wing | 19 years old, freshman | Michigan

Vecenie’s ranking: 46.

I don’t love Houstan as a prospect. I can squint and see why an NBA team would find him interesting if it believes he projects to be an effective shot maker on the move. But he’d have to be so good in that role, with remarkably high volume and high efficiency, to make it. I don’t see that for him for a long time. It’s possible Houstan could get stronger and become more capable of using his frame and physicality on defense while also becoming an effective shooter who generates 3s with off-ball movement. But I think we’re four years away from that possibility, which makes him someone I would rather target as a second-draft candidate instead of being the team that employs him during his first go-around in the league. It’s entirely possible he morphs into something valuable. I worry the Magic won’t be the one that will get that value.
A scoring guard.. never heard of one.

He probably should've stayed another year and could've raised his stock. If our coaching works magic with him he might be really intriguing

I wanna say this dude is Lakeland bound, but seeing how the past few years have gone that means he will probably start 20 games for the big league team.

Before last season. I remember being really high on him and projecting us to take him with our lotto pick. Obviously, he had a bad year and stock plummeted, but I think he can be a good shooter with size and defensive ability. Has great feel for the game too.

His release appears faster than advertised. Could be a solid role player making one of the Magic players expendible if pans out. BMP approves this pick.

Not sure how well a 3 and no-D player adapts to anything more than a 10 mpg player in the NBA though.

For those who were disappointed we didn't take a high level HS prospect who had a down year in Jaden Hardy:

Don't know anything about him and haven't seen any of his games. But If the magic keep him, (we already have almost no veteran presence) it means they had their eyes on him and see something.

Houstan was RCSI #6 from this freshman class.
Shot 36% from 3 on 5 attempts a game. I had read somewhere. that he had a 1-21 coldstreak during the season. It's kind of silly, but if you subtract that out he was a 40% shooter on the season.
78% from the line is fine.

You just have to have guys with his size and shooting ability to win playoff series. I am not sure he will pan out, but when you roll the dice you gotta roll it on size, length, and shooting. of course defense helps too, but can be learned.

Houstan looks like he's a couple of years away from being physically mature.

6'8" 205lb... as a SG/SF... isn't too crazy.

lol.... but you push so hard for a 6'10" 220lb big.... and makes it seem like he's gonna be good to go in the near future. lol

Actually i can't remember what it was i heard about Houstan in the last 2 weeks... but i remember it was enough to pique my interest as it was being discussed with him as a 1st rounder. We will see! Hope he comes along well... and happy that with so many on our roster... we have time to let him grow physically and as a player.

good point was made that i heard on a podcast...you know what we do with second round picks....the fact that they picked this kid must mean that they really like him and see something in him

https://www.nba.com/magic/news/caleb-houstan-has-a-chance-to-be-one-of-this-drafts-top-3-and-d-players-20220624

Nearly 60 percent of the 19-year-old’s shots at Michigan came from behind the 3-point line. He took 169 threes, making 60 of them (35.5 percent). Quite interesting, he shot it better the deeper out he was. On 3-point attempts shorter than 25 feet out, he shot 33.6 percent, while on attempts longer than 25 feet, he shot 38.7 percent.

Not only is he long for a wing, but he moves his feet extremely well laterally. He’s capable of guarding positions one through four. Even though he went scoreless in Michigan’s NCAA Tournament win over Tennessee in the Round of 32, he was terrific defensively. He played a big part in the Vols shooting 41 percent overall and 11 percent from 3-point distance

I'm still processing what is to have a 2nd rounder.
I'll need some days to realise it's true.
