Cool. I'm glad Bamba will be back because we need some rim protection and outside shooting.

Very strange to announce Bamba’s new number. We control his next year but that must mean we intend on keeping him around. And with Paolo being the pick, it makes sense to keep Bamba.

I don't know if it was real or not but last night I saw a tweet from the guy who prints our shirt names saying that Bamba was just due a number change and that was all.

There's no real scenario where I'm giving Bamba a multi-year deal for any sort of significant money.

He's a backup C and he should be paid accordingly. If he'll take a paycut and sign like 3/15, I'd do that. But I just have no interest in 10M AAV for a backup.

Wait, Isaac wears #1. This is going to be musical jerseys?

Edit: Bamba's going to be 11.

Does that mean they have a deal with Bamba?

I mean $10M AAV is the going rate for a back up big
The following guys make between 9-10
Tristan Thompson
Favors
Harrell
Ibaka
Plumlee
betweeen 8-9
Noel
Poeltl will be getting a raise at some point
Bryant
Kleber
Theiss

I'd do 2/20 for Bamba, and hope he either greatly improves, or we can find a replacement during those 2 years.

CHA and DET and TOR got their centers. Ayton's options have dwindled...not sure who's going to outbid us for Bamba...I like him back for a 3 or 4 year deal averaging 9, but in our usual descending format, team option, etc (I think we have all of the leverage)...Easy to trade out of but a bargain to keep if he plays well. 38% from 3 and elite rim-protecting/shot altering POTENTIAL (I know) at that price make him an elite backup Center and worth further assessment. The selection of PB makes him more likely to keep than if we had taken the others. I considered him a goner before the draft, now -unless something much better comes along for our money- I expect to keep him.

I am curious, what's the difference in our needs for a back up center by choosing Paolo rather than Jabari? Surely Paolo would be a better small ball 5 than Jabari...right?

The second i was thinking about Paolo being on our team... i thought.... We might need Bamba back to have that extra rim protection. Good to see if this is the case. We're going to have a ton of young talent to mold

why would Bamba do a 2 year deal that would kill any chance of a pay raise in FA23 when a lot of teams will have money. If anything he might just accept the 1 year QO then become a FA unless he gets a 4 year deal from someone else.

BINGO you fill the backup C spot with 1/2 year small deals or draft one and continue to move along.

I mean if you are a fringe- back up NBA player 2 years is better than 1. I am sure he views himself as better than that, and for all I know he gets 4 years this offseason. $20M guaranteed is nothing to scoff at. I do think he will stick in this league for a while, but $10M a year is real money.

I don't think players at his level are worried about how much money teams are going to have. Virtually any team could free up $10M a year and sign him outright or through S&T.

I would imagine Bamba gets S&T and I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up in NY or San Antonio

Maybe but most of the knocks on Paolo are defense and shooting range and rim protection isn't even discussed...some of this might be a function of having Mark Williams behind him (who ONLY plays like a conventional rim-protecting big). Maybe PB can play some C, but it's not really in his profile thus far. With the selection of PB, IMO, shooting at any and all positions becomes a priority and there's no question Bamba can do that. To me, drafting PB might lead us to keep the book on Bamba open because of his shooting. Jabari would have provided less doubt about our 3pt shooting...PLUS, these other Centers being drafted by teams who needed one make the possibility of suitors for Bamba less. Bamba's a disappointment, but there is definitely a price point where it's better to keep him than lose him for nothing. He improved greatly with opportunity last year. I don't think he's got much more upside, but it's (maybe) looking more and more like we can keep looking for less than we might have. He's a disappointment, but far from an out-of-the-league bust, IMO and the things he can do have value. Maybe we embrace him as the best backup C in the league and a matchup nightmare for some, rather than a weak starter.

Front load Bamba's deal. He will be a wonderful tradable asset in 2 years.
