The Mavs can have JR also, no charge.

You also over emphasize the lack of a 2016 pick when the moment Melo leaves, we will for sure be converting some of our excess cap space into draft picks much in the way other teams have done to facilitate free agent signings. We will be attempting to find diamonds in the rough through lower tier signings and our own young players and give them playing time, which will in turn increase their value and provide another potential avenue of obtaining draft picks.
Everything in your post sounds like defeatism and making excuses in preparation for the inevitable that we will likely bring back Melo at the full max, which as others have noted, we will just have to grin and bear.

One can only imagine what Bosh going to Houston, and Carmelo going to the Heat would do to this board.

Not a good precedent to get into --- players get false sense of value one you start artificially inflating their true contract value with extra $$$.
I haven't heard of this going on previously -- any examples?
I'm not sure there is a precedent.
But remember, we're entering somewhat uncharted territory in the NBA, the 4th year of the curretn CBA, in which 5 year contracts are the max and 4 years contracts are commonplace AND this is the first year the cap has moved upwards in about 8 years.
You're going to see more and more teams have significant cap room in the next few years, because the cap is goign to go up and contracts are going to expire more often.
OK - but I think a preference for a team like Philly - would be to take on 1-year of salary (ex Stat) if it can also secure an additional young asset (Shump or THJ) -- rather than just pay out their existing players.

I, for one, would need to take an extended break if this were to happen.

I don't have the pulse if anyone. I have empirical evidence. I have no interest in trying to get you to 'believe' me. Google stories about MSG's ratings after Melo was acquired. Google how the Knicks suddently became an attractive NATIONAL TV player whereas they weren't in previous years. National TV exposure it a big deal.
Consider even 2 or 4 home postseason date and 5 to 12 total postseason games provide programming opportunities that woudnt otherwise exist. Do you understand the implication of selling out just ONE postseason MSG game at postsseason ticket prices versus not?
I don't argue the KNicks can't remain a lucrative enterprise during down years, but let's not make the mistake of pretending it's not relevant when there is a choice between the two methods of rebuilding.
"Attempting" being the keyword there and giving young players more playing time doesn't by default increase their value, it could also expose them for being marginal players.
You're framing the "rebuild" as all the variables going in a direction favorable to the Knicks, and choosing to dismiss the lack of a 2016 first rounder and I'm sorry, its hard to take your version of the rebuild in a serious comparison between the Knicks options.
Yes, if we're going to ASSUME the KNicks rebuild goes swimmingly and we're also going to assume the Knicks free agency rebuild does badly, the choice is clear.
But a discussion in which both of those things are actual unknown variables is a very different discussion.
I can acknowledge BOTH paths can fail. If you're going to gloss over the limitations of the rebuild without a 2014 and 2016 first rounder there is no common ground for us to discuss.Everything in your post sounds like defeatism and making excuses in preparation for the inevitable that we will likely bring back Melo at the full max, which as others have noted, we will just have to grin and bear.
Well, you WILL have to bear it if you're a Knicks fan because you and I don't have a say. Up to you if you want to grin when being a Knicks fan is supposed to be a recreational pursuit.
I think bringing Anthony back is a the smarter, surer, but far from certain and far from perfect route. I think it'd be BETTER if he took less, but shouldn't be the difference between going in that direction or not.
I don't pretend the free agent route it certain or likely.
But please don't present your side that ignores the lack of a 2016 pick in favor of "finding diamonds in the rough" as some sort of more realistic view.
