Gaines was really high on Mitchell, but they felt 8 ws too high at that time. So Phil was trying to get a second lotto pick to draft Mitchell. He was talking to Portland about taking on one of their contracts for their pick and then try to use that pick to move up like the Jazz did to get the Nuggets pick. For whatever reason we couldnt do it. They also looked into any deals that made sense to trade down from 8 to get Mitchell as well.
That is inexcusable! How can 8 be too high for Mitchell but good enough for Ntilikina? I suspect Phil was asleep during those workouts. It just doesn't make sense how you can pick a player who doesn't have a half of Mitchell's talent and skill. You simply cannot make mistakes like that!
