Wow ..a friend of yours....hope I have not offended.

He's at least more qualified than Canada is.

About time they hired Locks. There really wasn't a decision between him, Canada, and Pep Hamilton. You can point out all the crap that happened in New Mexico and a lot has changed since then. That was 2011. He went to Maryland as an assistant to Randy Edsall and then moved on to Alabama. Was he a great OC at Maryland? No, but he recruited some of the top players there and he'll get better players now that he's the coach and Randy Edsall is long gone. His son Meiko was also shot to death last September.

Aside from recruiting, molding the staff is huge.

Did Ernie consult on this hire? I followed pretty close at New Mexico as I like watching train wrecks, there is no way this guy should be a head coach, much less in a power 5 conference. Once people look into this guy, I think it’s only even odds he ever coaches a game.

Hey, I was an old Cleveland Browns fan - going back to when Bill Belichick was head coach. He stunk there and was basically ridden out of town. But he rehabbed his career as an assistant to Bill Parcells - and was regarded as the top assistant coach in the NFL. Obviously, nobody's expecting Locksley to be Belichick, but he is following in that type of path, so far - being named the top assistant coach in college football.

Everyone knows his history. It's not a secret

Still think he was the right hire.

Best guy for the job. Everybody in the DMV loves him, esp. high school coaches and players. Did New Mexico work out? No, not many have won at New Mexico. Yes, he fought an assistant and other minor issues at New Mexico. BTW, the other issues were worked out legally. He obviously can't afford to f-ck up in College Park and needs to be on his best behavior.

GUT FEELING: not liking it.

It reminds me of University of Hawaii hiring of Norm Chow (at the very same time frame as Randy Edsall's hiring at UMCP).

Local folks LOVED Chow. Chow was a guy with REPUTATION but NOT A GOOD COACH AT ALL. Norm Chow had been an OC at USC. He had ties to BYU; but, at 67 years young he became a head coach for the first time. Here's how that worked out.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2015/11/01/norm-chow-fired-as-hawaiis-football-coach/75012246/

I THINK the University should do DUE DILIGENCE. Geez, if Locksley emerges ON MERIT; then I have no problem with the hire.

THIS SMACKS OF nepotism/cronyism and who you know. Just like Scott Brooks was SUPPOSEDLY or PERHAPS hired to get KD to DC; I THINK MIKE LOCKSLEY is being perceived to be a GREAT RECRUITER and THAT IS THE MOTIVATION for hiring him.

Was he even considered when James Franklin too over at Penn State and NOT at Maryland?

What kind of head coaching RESUME does Locksley have?

I'm sorry.. I don't like this if the process has NOT BEEN FULLY VETTED.

(Nick Rolovich at Hawaii would be a better hire IMHO).

Well wasn't Norm Chow was a 1 trick pony - who's rep was built almost entirely on developing QB's? Not sure this is the same type of situation.

Nepotism? Does Locksley have a relative making the decisions at MD? Who you know is always important for any high-ranking position. I mean... his last head coaching job ended 8 years ago, so it's entirely possible and actually probable that he's learned a lot since then. And he certainly shouldn't be down-graded for having success as an assistant and winning a national award for it. There's obviously no quarantees that come with him - just like there's no guarantees that anyone else would be successful at MD. He certainly adds credibility to a team that needs it.

Matt Canada deserved some consideration, but I think most outside observers would consider Locksley a better choice. And I think it made sense to get someone outside of the organization that allowed the situation to happen in the first place - not that Canada had any direct blame in it.

Bob Wade was a poor hire because he even though he was a great HS coach, that's a gigantic step up to the ACC from Dunbar. Locks has paid his dues for 25 years as an assistant coach a couple of bad years as a head coach at New Mexico. It could be a bad move but because of what happened to Jordan McNair, he was the right hire at the right time to try and help heal the DMV's feelings towards the school in terms of how the high schools feel about the program. The fact that he and Marty McNair are friends (both have lost sons) doesn't hurt his cause as I'm sure he's still going to sue the school. But McNair can also sway the Baltimore HS programs not to send their kids to College Park. I'm not saying he's going to give him his blessing but now that they've made substantial changes to the training staff, coaching staff, and S&C staff, he basically got what he wanted.

They should keep Dad McNair very very close to the program
