I went to the mu game tonight and the place was rocking. But when you actually analyze why the game was exciting it was because after a big play by MU, cuse would have another stupid TO for a huge breakaway. It wasn't good defense but rather the orange got nervous and screwed up. Bad basketball with extremely athletic players lead to exciting plays. Nba players are just too calm and skilled to give up runs like that. When you have a run in the nba it is usually do to great plays, not mistakes... But it's much rarer.
The student sections at college games are what makes it so enjoyable for me at least.
I couldn't make it to the MU/Syracuse game, but watched it on TV and i could just feel the atmosphere coming through that TV. On the flip side, most NBA games have a much blander atmosphere except for pockets of excitement during a close game. That's a big factor in why i rarely attend Bucks games anymore, to often it's a largely dull experience as most of the crowd sits on their hands for 80% of the game.
Go to a say MU/Pitt, MU/Syracuse, UW/MSU, UW/OSU, etc type of game instead and the arena is rocking most of that game, and the students are a big reason why.
I'll grant that the quality of play in college ball has decreased now that most top players leave after a year or two at most, but for me there is an excitement factor to college regular season games that the NBA just can't match until their playoffs start.
