The Bulls have supposedly scouted him heavily and we just shored up our SF position with Otto, whilst Dunn's been inconsistent at best. Pax stated yesterday that we have '4 out of 5 starting positions solidified' (paraphrasing).
The stand-out issue there is Morant/Lavine defensively - that's not ideal. But other than that, we desperately need a quality on-ball option as both a scorer and facilitator, and I think Morant can be somewhat prolific in that role. With Lavine/Porter/Markkanen, and hopefully WCJ getting more of a green light from 3 next season, the spacing will be ideal.
I would maybe be a bit concerned about the cumulative decision making between Morant and Lavine, they're not bad but neither are super high IQ decision guys in that way, be a bit concerning for them to have the keys (coming up to the deadline I was liking Lonzo as a fit because of that aspect in particular).
I think though Lavine shouldn't be in your long term plans. If Morant gets drafted by Chic and plays well, it might be positive to trade one of the two when the selling price is at an all time high, similar to what Phoenix should have done with Booker.
Personally, I am a fan of Lavine and think we should keep him around. I think Book is a fine piece for the Suns as well - though the contract is massive.
Ideally, I would want to keep Morant and Lavine together. I'm not going to say they're a terrible fit, because I don't see any issues offensively, but defense is obviously a concern. We've got great spacing, so plenty of room for Morant to drive and make plays with the ball in his hands, and feed more dependent scorers like Otto/Lauri/WCJ. Lavine's off-ball numbers are very impressive as well and I think being able to move him off the ball and spot up more will benefit him.
With the defense, Dame and CJ work, but there's probably a slightly higher level of decision making between those 2, and they're surrounded by versatile, defensive guys. So it is an issue. That's why I'm desperately looking for any potential Morant can show on the defensive end. He has the tools, especially if he gets stronger, he can certainly make defensive plays, but I can only hope that the immense usage going down in the NBA would improve his possession to possession defense, like many had argued was a factor with Trae the year before.
