And lose millions to play with the Knicks, who haven't won anything in over 40+ years? Both of those guys will lose about 7-10 million/year each for a Chip! multiply that 5 years is no chump change to lose "Just to play in the NYC".
Gasol won't just play in NYC, he will play with a legit all star that has shown can take over games offensively, something he doesn't have in Memphis. He can stay in Memphis and get that extra money, but until that team gets him another all star on that team he won't win jack **** in the playoffs.
Aldridge has Lillard, so I would understand his decision way more if he stays with Portland.
I disagree with alot of the assessment here.
Gasol is right now in a situation where Randolph has ceded alpha status to Gasol and where Mike Conley plays pg with post needs in mind and Gasol has offensive control on many possessions at the post. I dont think he would be keen on playing out in NY second fiddle to Melo, a seemingly iso post guy.
Aldridge has Lillard... a shoot first point guard who plays no defense. Dame is not exactly a great compliment to Aldridge. Most of Aldridge plays/points come from high post isos. Would he want to come to NY and play along side Melo who does much of the same thing?
But who actually knows what is on these guys minds. I dont think its simple and straightforward.... except for the getting more money part.
Gasol going to New York won't guarantee a title, but him having Melo would automatically give him the best teammate he ever had in his whole career. Teamwork can only get u so far, but the norm in this league is that star players win titles with other star players. Look if I was him, I probably would stay in Memphis, cause get your money first and foremost. But I'm just talking about title potential. If he wants to win a title, New York is an easier and more realistic path than staying in Memphis. Honestly, the Spurs would give Gasol a better shot at a title than Memphis, because out there he would have a developing all star in Leonard, and an already established player in Parker at pg. Gasol won't win a title without another star player besides him. He doesn't have one in Memphis. Plain and simple.
