Anyway, Linux + Firefox + Ublock Origin + NoScript makes this site just a breeze on PC. Never had a whiff of any issues, except having to enable scripting by jsdeliver for and-1's, and clicking through to view tweets. No CPU/ram hogging at all, even after extended browsing.

On mobile: android + Opera Mini, with no addons whatsoever, has worked pretty well. Small, easily ignorable ads on top and bottom. Get a security alert when first loading the site, which I ignore because I never log in on mobile, so that may not work for everyone.

I've used Mint, along with a bunch of other Linux flavors, and also a ton of Ubuntu derivatives.
I created my own, for 1 distro.

I'm so used to using Google Products. But, I'll have to try that combo, Linux + Firefox + Ublock Origin + NoScript.

Nice. What do you prefer about Ubuntu that's keeping you there?

I've always been wary about the Google ecosystem. I just looked up browser market share and was stunned to see how aggressively Google has cornered the market since the last time I was paying attention. Had no idea Firefox had become such an endangered species:

Ubuntu is used for a lot of things in the Real World, that you'd surprised about.
I.e.: The MBTA's (Transit System), Camera System is run by Ubuntu.

Google is a very eclectic company.

TBH, I don't experience it too much.
But when the computer does start using more resources than usual, it's Always RealGM, using it.

And I mean like, 10 times more than any other site, including Facebook.

I have to learn to accept this website looking like it's from 2007? Do I have to learn to accept no basic search feature?

Should I accept NFL contests and Spurs jobs postings instead of actual basketball content from the founders and supposed leaders of this forum?

Should I accept a trash general board?

I've seen forums that were run much better and had actual influence on the real world fail over much less than the current issues this website has.

I do not accept the incomptence, ignorance and indolence of the heads of this forum. At all. Reddit will kill this forum and Clutch fans sooner than all of you think.

I would absolutely not accept it and just install like two extensions that will fix the issue.

I know f*** all about computers, although I sure know how to ruin them. I have very rarely in nearly 10 years had a problem with realgm operating functionally. :dontknow: like others are saying maybe some people be utlilizing the wrong adblock thingies but probably people just visit too many herpes porn sites and blame it on realgm this guy again ----> :dontknow:

When just typing a sentence takes like 3 minutes at times, it’s an issue. I only use my iPhone on this site and this is the only site I have issues with. It freezes even when I get in a thead and go page to page.

I don’t use ad blockers because I shouldn’t have to. It’s not just about ads popping up, it’s about not being about to type a sentence because the site freezes. Right now has I’m tpying this, I have no issues. It’s working perfect.

There are other times were I try to type sometime and it’s takes several minutes to type in about 5 words. I usually leave the time and try later in the day.

Again, I shouldn’t have to use as blockers because all other sites I was my iPhone on are fine.

Two extensions will fix this website looking like a 45 year old divorced dad made it in 2007? Two extensions will get Howard off his lazy ass and actually make some basketball content?

Two extensions will give me a basic search feature?

Send me those links, please. I'd love some of these God-extensions.

Yeah, just install ublock origin. What does your site look like? It's 2018 and most websites are basically garbage from a UI/UX perspective, but it's fine if you can work around it by blocking elements that are obnoxious. Step one is disable signatures here, step two is install ublock origin, privacy badger, Disconnect, and Ghostery; perhaps the last three are overkill. No website cares about spending money on UX.

I don't know about search, I feel like it's been broken for a decade so obviously not going to be fixed, but you can just use google to search here by just adding "site:realgm.com/boards" to the end of your search.

Works with Firefox and Windows 7.

Does not work with Chrome or Internet Explorer on my laptop or desktop.

Chrome works great with a Samsung S8;
OK with an S7.
Last May it stopped working on an S5.

Oh yeah, I agree with you on all the functionality stuff. Was only talking about intrusive ads. I long ago accepted that even sites that I like very much are going to show their asses on that front.

RealGM is definitely in serious danger of going the way of the dodo overall, though. And I'm not entirely convinced they're not okay with it. I've seen plenty of sites slowly let certain parts fall into disuse and die from neglect while they focus their resources on their main moneymakers. I have a hunch that most of their effort is going into stats and information / "GM resources" these days, and the will just isn't there any more to put as much time into the forum as it needs.

All speculation though. I'll stick around as long as there's good conversation to have with you all (and probably a bit after that).

There are a number of people complaining about the functionality of this site.

I'm a techy (programmer), no way I have the time to touch this thing haha. In my opinion the entire site needs to be nuked and completely redone. It looks like it was made 15 years ago and never touched again.

CoP wrote:Cannot recommend this enough: On mobile, download Brave browser app. Adblock built in. I had been avoiding the site for months, then someone on here recommended Brave. I have had zero problems since. Zero.

Also recommend this, or another chome-based browser with adblock if you're on mobile(there's a bunch out there if you're on Android, no clue what's available for iOS users). I used to get tons of the fake virus or "You Won [fill in the blank]" popups before I switched. Never going back to regular chrome unless they add the ability to install extensions (or include a built-in adblocker).

I think there's some kind of memory leak in the scripting - I get constant notifications that the app is using an exceptional amount of memory and that my computer will be more responsive if I close out of it.

Shouldn't need to switch to a niche browser for the site to be functional - don't know if it's the ads, or something else, but getting to the point where I'm thinking of starting an account on another forum.

I'd guess they wouldn't need to transition to an entirely new back-end, and I don't care about the visuals. But the trade checker used to be the big draw with this site, and ESPN built something a generation beyond it. There's very little on this site in terms of content or stats (do they pay for writing? I'll write for them), and the conversation is the content.

Do they need money? What's the cost of a programmer to fix it? I'd donate small amounts of money to end the **** show.

Was cruising the site today when a pop-up ad for porn took over. Just lovely. I enjoy the occasional skin flick, but not when I'm trying to read basketball news. Thanks RealGM.

The problem with this site is that you just have to use an ad blocker. This site is absolutely ferocious with crappy ads. This is what some web guys have to understand - if you hit people that hard with ads - they block them and every website loses.
