I’ve been watching some highlights recently, and I’m amazed by how many basketball decisions happen on the fly — when multiple players make the right choices based on the situation. But most importantly, I think communication is probably the most underrated part of defense. Guys like Draymond Green or KG, who can naturally bark out commands while anchoring the defense, have been successful in part because of their communication skills.

Now, back to Joan — I think his English is currently one of the things limiting him. Hopefully, Rudy’s presence can help him with that.

In other words, Joan is currently playing purely on instinct and isn’t yet a part of the system. Sometimes that leads to wow moments, but a system is when multiple players work together so that in 10 similar possessions, the team can expect the same outcome in 8–9 of them.

With Rudy, for example, it was the drop coverage + point-of-attack defense from NAW and Jaden. In Miami’s case with Bam, it’s the zone defense. Joan also needs at least one defensive pairing like that in order to become a true system player.

You can already see how it works on offense in his connection with Ingles — even a hundred-year-old Joe is throwing no-look passes to Beringer like it’s nothing.
